question regarding USB support to help debugging, what will be the M1 target machine USB role ? Device ?

it probably makes sense to add device/gadget mode to m1n1 to make proxyclient.py more accessible. but linux host mode is going to be a lot more useful ;)

This means the M1 target machine shall support device mode role.I suppose this will be like iPhone/iPads are currently doing. Is there a existing use case today where a Mac is running as a USB device ? I can't think of one at the moment.

<marshmallow>
if PXN is architecturally enforced, why does even PXN exist?
<j`ey>
what's enforced is PXN *if* EL0 has writable access
<marcan>
PXN is useful for e.g. W^X in kernel mode
<marcan>
jeff_miw: macOS already supports being a device and behaving as a network device for data transfer. it is also used for DFU mode.
<j`ey>
and just never executing code that's accessible from EL0, even if its read only
<marcan>
this replaces the old target disk mode which worked as a block device
<marcan>
yeah

<marshmallow>
well, PXN is useful only in kernel mode
<j`ey>
that's what the P is!
<marshmallow>
k, so the PXN bit works independently of the protection attributes of the EL0 translation tables, correct?
<marshmallow>
if a function pointer in the kernel points to userspace code, and the area is marked as executable-only, then PXN fits in. if the area is marked as writable-only, that is prohibited 'by default'.

marcan: macos as a network device for data transfer, this is cool. how do you do that ?
