<marcan> kettenis: that's how I read it too, but yet the way Linux does writel() is just `dmb oshst` before the write
<marcan> and in theory writel() is supposed to be safe for exactly that use case

<bgb> marcan: for the MacOS 11.2.2 thing, I think we are safe if we do not upgrade, right?
<marcan> bgb: what, the usb c thing?
<marcan> I haven't tested it yet but I doubt they broke the serial support?
<marcan> I can do that in a sec
<bgb> yes, the usb-c thing
<bgb> what if they do break it in the vdm level? is it possible?
<marcan> I mean of course they could remove the feature altogether if they felt like it
<marcan> but why would they?
<marcan> this is a completely baseless hypothetical
<bgb> ok

<marcan> heh, my MBA claimed to be charging, with VBUS powered off of an Arduino GPIO output
<marcan> that seems.... unlikely
<marcan> oh, it says "not charging" but "power source: power adapter"
<marcan> that's clearly a lie; possibly a bug
<marcan> I get the feeling these machines will claim to be "powered" by an adapter supplying only 5V/500mA but not *actually* run off of that...
<marcan> tested macvdmtool as a host, vdmtool target, etc on the Macbook Air. No change. 11.2.2 is fine.

<kettenis> marcan: yes another dmb should be enough to guarantee that the device sees the register write after it sees the earlier memory writes

<modwizcode> Theoretically I think that if dmb could even make that gurantee you'd need a full dmb sy, I don't think oshst would be enough either... I'm assuming that luck is what make it enough and that memory ops just complete way too quick or the cache coherance compensates somehow.
<modwizcode> It's very strange that it's not properly documented though, that seems like the most important guidence to give to people

<kettenis> the architecture doesn't really specify what the inner-sharable and outer-sharable domains really consist of
<kettenis> Linux obviously assumes that the CPUs are all in the inner-sharable domain
