There are a few tricks and optimizations which have to be part of the reference implementation because they affect the semantics. I think the reference implementation shows that the complexity they add is minimal, and the implementation of proofs of inclusion and exclusion and their verification is notably simple

In a typical scenario, one app would implement a bitid for auth purposes and the private key would be protected within the scope of that application.

When you introduce a network of applications, the challenge then becomes sharing the private key.

The only method I can think of is to encrypt the key with a password generated by the auth server.
