<lgierth> jbenet: about to switch ipfs.io from github pages over to the gateway (second try)
<lgierth> ... one meldium lets me log in :/

<lgierth> yeah maybe

<Luzifer> lgierth: with those filter rules in place?
<lgierth> i think i might have overwritten them
<lgierth> let me check
<lgierth> yeah probably
<lgierth> stupid day
<Luzifer> shouldn't happen because these addresses are blocked
<Luzifer> we need an "is this hetzner?"-detection which automatically loads the rule-set… -_-
<lgierth> or just stop randomly dialing...
<lgierth> it's not a particularly smart idea anyhow :)
<lgierth> meldium is hilarious. our service is logging you into services. can't log into meldium because google accounts is throttling us? not our problem

<jbenet> lgierth: it is not randomly dialing, it is dialing addresses it receives from peers. it's a tradeoff: either you dial people in your local network and connect without going to the isp/backbone, or you don't. we can be smarter though and not dial local addresses in networks we're not part of. BUT if the ips match, computers in LANs do have to dial for best
<jbenet> perf (without the filters or some other option)
<lgierth> ah so it's not random
<lgierth> then forgot what i said :)
<jbenet> it looks random because there's so many local addrs.
<jbenet> (so we may be smarter about that too)
<lgierth> yeah checking the local arp tables, but that's not foolproof either
<zorun> > IPv6
<zorun> jbenet: btw, glad to see that the IPv6 PR was merged :)
compleatang has quit [Quit: Leaving.]
<lgierth> btw, it looks like we can't have both CNAME and TXT records with the same name
<zorun> nope, a CNAME is like a redirection
<zorun> so you can't have any other record
<zorun> put the TXT on the pointed name :)
<lgierth> i know
<lgierth> not an option
<lgierth> we want people to be able to point their domain to a gateway, and signal the gateway which object to serve, by means of the TXT record
<lgierth> CNAME => gateway.ipfs.io. would be neat but won't work out. will have to be A/AAAA
<jbenet> hmmm bummer
<zorun> use a SRV record instead?
<zorun> using the DNS for signalling feels weird
<lgierth> can't have SRV and CNAME either
<jbenet> we could add something like checking both "<domain>" and "ipfs.<domain>" for a TXT record
<zorun> I know, but you can use, eel-known name
<jbenet> so CNAME keeps working as usual DNS, and we check one extra place for the TXT record
<lgierth> i like
<lgierth> ohai: http://dogfeed.ipfs.io/
<lgierth> directory listings css borked: http://dogfeed.ipfs.io/styles
<jbenet> lgierth: it's not recognizing the /ipfs and /ipns routes to be gateway? see http://dogfeed.ipfs.io/ipfs/QmXB7PLRWH6bCiwrGh2MrBBjNkLv3mY3JdYXCikYZSwLED/bootstrap.min.css
<lgierth> jbenet: yeah, intentionally, from what i understand. serves exactly one object
<jbenet> lgierth: ?? to move the gateway to ipfs.io we need to be able to pass /ipfs and /ipns to the gateway,
<lgierth> on ipfs.io, yeah
<lgierth> but not for other domains
<jbenet> oh i meant test everything
<jbenet> (like, however it's supposed to work, in another domain, before making the switch in the main one, as there's real traffic?) like a staging.
<jbenet> or something
<jbenet> also, you found a bug though. the style should be local anyway
<jbenet> not an ipfs hash
<jbenet> (relative)

<lgierth> yep, agree on both
<lgierth> todo: 1) "embed" the styles 2) make /ipfs and /ipns work for ipfs.io
<lgierth> s/ipfs.io/somecanonicaldomain.net/
<lgierth> 1) is for required for self-hosting ipfs.io, 2) is for migrating gateway.ipfs.io

<M-davidar> lgierth: another option could be to cname to <hash>.ipfs.io, kill two birds with one stone
<jbenet> we'll need https://github.com/neocities/hshca/ for that-- as our base58 hashes are case sensitive and DNS is not
chriscool has quit [Ping timeout: 264 seconds]
<lgierth> M-davidar: i don't completely understand
<lgierth> oh yeah, meld cname and txt into one
<lgierth> that's very implicit though
<ehd> good day, people of ipfs
<lgierth> we'd have to match the domain name against something to guess whether it's meant to be a hash
<lgierth> krl: any idea how we can strip down bootstrap.min.css and icons.css in the directory listings? it's >200KB and i'd like to embed both in the html so that it's self-contained

<krl> lgierth: hmm, we could probably strip out all bootstrap classes we don't use
<daviddias> all of these are parts of libp2p
<daviddias> https://github.com/diasdavid/node-ipfs-swarm is responsible for opening sockets, protocol muxing and stream muxing
<daviddias> currently has a issue identified on closing the listener gracefully that dignifiedquire identified, but with battlemesh+ccc focus on the kad-router, I haven't been able to properly dig on it (hint: would be great to have help here :) )
<daviddias> right now my focus is on https://github.com/diasdavid/node-ipfs-kad-router
<daviddias> been writting some tests, but so far so go, the thing does its job (which is finding the closest peers to a given key on a DHT mounted on top of swarm)
<daviddias> also, consider reading this -> https://github.com/diasdavid/specs/blob/protocol-spec/protocol/network/README.md, explains a lot of the needs for all of the things that are implemented on those repos
<OutBackDingo> daviddias: i see your still at it
<daviddias> also, would be nice to have tests for https://github.com/diasdavid/node-ipfs-peer-id and https://github.com/diasdavid/node-ipfs-peer, I pretty much battle test them enough, but having tests and adding CI would be nice so that other people feel comfortable contributing

<jbenet> lgierth: thinking about it more, it may be that the styles don't need to be embedded. Because this is a directory listing generated from a template, by the gateway code itself. It has to pull the styles from somewhere. Embedding will make all the pageloads slower (doesn't leverage http caching).
<jbenet> The directory listing is showing up thy way because the gateway is running, but the proper gateway routes aren't reachable
<jbenet> (Hmm yeah it is clunky not sure what the fix should be, but if you have a good idea lets do it)
<krl> we could still bundle the css into one lump

<jbenet> ReactorScram: thanks for the heads up-- if someone else could go and rep, that'd be sweet. i cant atm
<lgierth> jbenet: the other option is allowing /ipfs and /ipns on arbitrary domains, but i'm really not sure what security implications that would have, re: suborigin
<jbenet> lgierth: yeah we dont even make sure they always have the webui
<jbenet> lgierth: oh pretty bad implicatios
<lgierth> yeah, arbitrary code on domain.net
<jbenet> /ipfs/<hash>/stealcookies.html
<krl> lgierth: for the index page, '..' should probably be hidden on top-level hashes

<jbenet> mafintosh: where's that github bot you wrote?
