The protocol spec mentions that block exchange can be done over http rather than bitswap, is there any further documentation on how one would go about connecting a http server to the ipfs network?

Hi everyone. I'm a bit of an IPFS-n00b, but have already read some documentation and watched a few videos.

<livegnik>
I was wondering if anyone here knows if it's possible to run a Bitcoin-node on IPFS. Any experience by any chance?
gatesvp has joined #ipfs
<livegnik>
I want to run sort-like software, Identifi, which is a fork of bitcoind (w/o a blockchain, just sqlite3) and utilizes the same networking mostly. Therefore my question.
<gatesvp>
@livegnik what exactly do you mean by "run a bitcoin node on IPFS?" IPFS is effectively a distributed filesystem...
<gatesvp>
so you could theoretically host the block chain in IPFS
<gatesvp>
I'm not the expert here, but I believe that some people have already tried such things (see Ethereum)
<livegnik>
Yes, interesting. Since there's no blockchain involved here ... Each node floods all info to all other nodes. Each node is identified by a pubkey, so a node has to whitelist that pubkey into its own WoT in order to store the other nodes messages.
<livegnik>
Cool, thanks! I'll check it out.
freedaemon has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<livegnik>
The thing with the public nodes is that you'd like to ensure that a certain node is flooding all the information. Not sure how yet, but I thought there might be a possible way to obtain this goal via IPFS.
<livegnik>
... apart from using a blockchain. ;)
notduncansmith has joined #ipfs
notduncansmith has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
<gatesvp>
@livegnik: Just looking at the Identifi docs, it sounds like you're trying to build a distributed social network.
<rschulman>
livegnik: Think of IPFS as a distribution network, and you’ll be most of the way there
<rschulman>
whyrusleeping: o/
<gatesvp>
Hey, so was I, then I realized that the distributed file system isn't really "there" yet, which is what pulled me into IPFS...
<gatesvp>
honestly, the missing part on IPFS is the whole key infrastructure... right now each IPFS node currently generate a Pub/Priv key pair, but those are not really editable or importable
<gatesvp>
However, they can be used for effectively creating a permalink
<gatesvp>
We're still discussing the implementation of managing a key-chain within an IPFS node (AFAIK), but once that's done, this whole distributed social network is just a layer of apps over top of the IPFS basics
