I've been playing with go-ipfs and datproject.org. I discovered that with dat very little time is needed for files to become downloadable in the network. While with ipfs some time must pass between announcement and ability to download. Why is that?
herzmeister has joined #ipfs
<Kubuxu>
pepesza: I didn't observe that, it might take a bit longer (a second) to download file from node you are not directly connected to as you have to establish that connection.
Encrypt has quit [Quit: Quit]

but usually it is almost instant

<jbenet>
it may be dht advertising slowdown-- we definitely need to improve how we do that piece
<pepesza>
Kubuxu: dat does not have daemon running at all. App starts with announcement and in very short time I'm able to download at other machine.
ylp1 has quit [Ping timeout: 260 seconds]

pepesza: app running is the equivalent of a daemon
<jbenet>
pepesza: wonder if it could be some nat problems. try accessing your content via ipfs.io/ipfs/<hash>

jbenet: I have one machine behind symmetric NAT, one behind sane NAT, one with public IP. No upnp or nat-pnp anywhere. In sane-nat <-> public ip scenario dat is faster. And when files are served by machine behind symmetric NAT both ipfs and dat fail.
<pepesza>
jbenet: although it still can be a problem with ipfs dealing with sane NAT. I can't test scenario when IPFS is serving from machine with public IP because of old kernel (openvz).
<Kubuxu>
what are the times you are measuring?
<pepesza>
jbenet: yeah, I need a better setup
<pepesza>
kubuxu: time between announcement and start of the download. For IPFS announcement is at `ipfs add file` and for dat announcement is at `dat directory`.
<alterego>
Why is the size of a node reported 2 characters larger than it's data?
<alterego>
s/characters/bytes/
<jbenet>
if you have the ipfs daemon running announcement should be immediate, a delay = a bug we should fix :)
<jbenet>
alterego: maybe framing.
infinity0 has joined #ipfs
<alterego>
jbenet: well this isn't unixfs, this is my own custom nodes.
<jbenet>
alterego: maybe merkledag framing
<jbenet>
unless these are new ipld nodes
<alterego>
I'm using ipld-dag-pb js lib.
<alterego>
So no idea :)
<pepesza>
jbenet: yes, ipfs daemon is running at the moment of announcement. I'm buying a better VPS right now (openvz be damned). Will get back with proper test results.
<alterego>
It's not a problem, but meh :D
<jbenet>
pepesza: there may be a bunch of network problems going on. We honestly have a ton to optimize
<jbenet>
we've been pretty focused on a bunch of important features (eg all the ipld magic, libp2p modules, etc), and are sorely needing some optimization passes
<jbenet>
contributions very welcome and requested! even just reliable network tests that can produce good reports of timing issues.
<alterego>
It's really great that you're working on those foundations though, they seem really solid atm.
<jbenet>
alterego: thanks! yeah we think so too. all these pieces will be super useful to a ton of projects.
<jbenet>
working on ipfs works in layers, or multiple passes through the stack
<jbenet>
im super stoked about ipld being out-- we'll be making a bunch of cool demos / posts about it in near future

jbenet: I'm from Golem project. We do need IPFS or similar tool because our project is also fully distributed/decentralized. I'm very interested in being able to work with IPFS in different networking confugraitons.
<pepesza>
jbenet: I'll try to pinpoint scenarios where problems arise.
<alterego>
jbenet: is there any plans to add the ability to do NAT punching for applications through libp2p? So I can use ipfs for NAT traversal?
<jbenet>
pepesza: ah hello o/
<jbenet>
pepesza: i saw your blog post-- i was going to write-- what mysterious failures did you observe?
<jbenet>
alterego: yep
<jbenet>
alterego: we just need this implemented next to be able to use browser-level nat traversal: https://github.com/libp2p/xtp
<alterego>
great
<jbenet>
