<jbenet> mildred: maybe i misunderstand the question. but: the distinction is there mostly because we are asking for different things: (a) one asks for the value, the other (b) asks for a records for the value (which may be "sloppily" delivered. (sloppy as in Coral).
<jbenet> (records = provider records, which we use to directly connect and retrieve the value.
pcre_ has joined #ipfs
<jbenet> we probably could rearrange things, now that the record system is able of mature (we have ipld now! \o/) , if we see some good ways to synthesize without loosing properties.
<whyrusleeping> M-hash: was in hall B
<whyrusleeping> bunch of short talks
<jbenet> (the sloppy delivery is there because maintaining "a list of peers which are associated with a hash" (i.e. provider records for a cid) is best done by maintaining a distributed set, that a single value (eg. it's very racey if we have to r=GetRecordFor(k), AddSelfToRecord(r), PutRecordFor(k, r).

<whyrusleeping> pjz: yeah... fixing problems is good. I wish i was making any progress
<whyrusleeping> currently i'm between a rock and a hard place
<whyrusleeping> on one hand, yamux is terrible, uses tons of RAM and randomly hangs
<whyrusleeping> i could *maybe* hack around the hanging issue, but it wouldnt be a nice fix
<whyrusleeping> but the memory issue would require nearly an entire rewrite
<whyrusleeping> on the other side, i have the go-multiplex code
<whyrusleeping> which works pretty well, and uses very little memory
<whyrusleeping> except it gets kinda slow
<whyrusleeping> so i'm working on fixing the slowness
<whyrusleeping> but the problem is that all the tests i'm writing show it being fast
<pjz> Mateon1: found the issue, fixing it now; give me a few mins ;)
<pjz> whyrusleeping: does 0.4.5 gate on fixing those things?
<whyrusleeping> pjz: i don't want it to
<whyrusleeping> er
<whyrusleeping> no. it won't
<whyrusleeping> these fixes will ship when i finish them

<whyrusleeping> i've been out of the flow of things for a week or so

<achin> and i think it would be useful to have some utility (possibly implemented in JS and hosted in ipfs) to validate the datapackage.json files that are (should be) part of each archive
<alterego> So, I have created a node, when I run findprovs I get a hit from a random peer that I know couldn't have it: QmfPZcnVAEjXABiA7StETRUKkS8FzNt968Z8HynbJR7oci
<alterego> Is there something I'm missing here?
<lgierth> achin: yeah definitely -- i didn't actually mean to get all knee-deep into it, just wanted to put up the 33c3 stuff :)
<achin> lgierth: i think the 33c3 excuse was a great reason to push forward on this!
<lgierth> heh yeah :)

<achin> i'd like to help keep this page updated and moving forword. what's the best way to get the website updated after the repo is updated? to ping you, or someone else on the team?
<achin> (or maybe a CI bot to deploy it)
<lgierth> right now it's to ping me or victorbjelkholm[ or Kubuxu or whyrusleeping
<achin> k
<Kubuxu> yeah, we have to figure out the DNS thing :p
<lgierth> but i'm thinking we could have an ipns docker image on cloud.ipfs.team
<lgierth> but yeah that'd be /ipns
<Kubuxu> yeah, we could use ipns if it wasn't that slow
<alterego> God I wish js-ipfs-api findprovs to be more async.
<Kubuxu> I tried it with my own page, it was hard :/
<alterego> Callback on results as the come in.
<lgierth> brodo: open an issue in ipfs/archives please :)
<brodo> @lgierth i will
<achin> and last thought before i disappear to find food -- the RFC archive has an automatic 'update checker', so if you load an old version, you'll get a notice about a newer version available. right now that uses my personal ipns, but i wonder if in the future, this would be done with a more "official" archives.ipfs.io ipns
<brodo> @lgierth it's already in there: https://github.com/ipfs/archives/issues/49
<lgierth> hah good
<lgierth> if you have a hash for something, you can open a PR for index.html
