hey guys, quick question I am wanting to get a mysql database running on raspbian to hold all of the music libary entries
<Abused>
so the situation is i have 1 Pi 3 as a server for all of the music on an HDD and 3 Pi's as clients with kodi on them
<Abused>
should I install kodi on the server pi and use its mysql features to share the libaray with the 3 others?
<Abused>
or is there a way to share the library without installing kodi
<chewitt>
no need to have Kodi on the 'server' pi
<chewitt>
only the source files (shared) and the MySQL (or MariaDB) database
<Abused>
define shared?
<chewitt>
client devices need access to the media files in the DB or they can't play them :)
<Abused>
sorry the mysql database would have to be added onto by the clients
<chewitt>
Kodi has no 'server' component
<chewitt>
only clients with a common database and common sources
<Abused>
correct but how to get all of the artwork and all that to the clients and scraped without using kodi?
<chewitt>
each client will build it's own art cache
<Abused>
ok so basically set up the server pi and host the files through SMB or something and set up a cient PI with kodi and set the mysql database back to the server pi mysql instance
<Abused>
and then the other pis will pull from the mysql?
<chewitt>
correct
<Abused>
because that is what sucks is having something go wrong and having to rebuild the entire libaries
<chewitt>
except for art/thumbs which are cached locally on each device

<chewitt>
the rest of the library is pulled from the DB
<Abused>
ok i will have to play with this some more before getting it right
<Abused>
no biggie thanks for the help
<chewitt>
np
<chewitt>
users frequently try to come up with clever workarounds for the lack of common thumb caching .. but the current design "is what it is" and most clever solutions end up corrupting something
<chewitt>
it's counter intuitive to accept defeat and let Kodi "duplicate all the downloading" .. but it's usually the path of least resistance
<chewitt>
someday that might get fixed
<Abused>
rysync?
<Abused>
maybe, i can try it at least and find out
<Abused>
i have got a bunch of old pis laying around and I would like to put them to work as some IP cams
<Abused>
maybe a doorbell cam

there's an addon for ipcams .. not sure if it's in the Kodi repo or somewhere else
