<The_Coolest>
hey chewitt, I love the move you pulled with my openvfd driver. Congratulations
<chewitt>
I gave up on common sense prevailing on your choice of GPLv3 for a kernel driver
<chewitt>
but the effort is basically abandoned and I will probably just cull the repo
<chewitt>
run "git grep gplv3" on any linux git repo to see how licence compatible gplv3 is
<The_Coolest>
Right. So you didn't like my opinion on what you thought was a good idea, so you decided to just "fork" it, without actually forking it, because it's not even on my forks list.
<chewitt>
there's no law that says forks must use the github clone process
<chewitt>
CE claims to be a fork of LE .. but has no GH clone/fork relationship
<chewitt>
i'd rather just use your upstream source
<chewitt>
but it is not license compatible with a GPLv2 kernel
<The_Coolest>
Yeah. That's just too bad
<chewitt>
the only people who lose out are users

And that dig at me in the README.md is great also.
<chewitt>
honeslty.. sorry, but the whole silliness around GPLv3-itis just pissed me off, probably as much as you're pissed off
<chewitt>
and text is the worlds worst medium for emotions
<The_Coolest>
I get it, I had the same feeling when you proposed the changes for the addon.
<chewitt>
the _best_ outcome for everyone is to license the code GPLv2 so it's kernel compatible, and I will happily nuke/pave that repo
<The_Coolest>
Anyway... I just wanted to get it out there. Only saw that last night.
<chewitt>
fwiw, the idea of renaming confs to follow device-tree filenames so they can be auto-loaded works well
<The_Coolest>
It will not work for generic devices, because most of them use different GPIO pins to drive the display. So you'll need to have a dtb per device.
<The_Coolest>
And conf file per device.
<chewitt>
sure, but one of the goals (at least for LE) has always been out-of-box experience
<chewitt>
legacy kernels have no upstream to send new device-trees so it all gets hoarded in local repos
<chewitt>
the mainline move is a big opportunity to fix that by sending more device-trees upstream

sometimes it feels like makework
<chewitt>
but more effort to support hardware ultimately results in better user experience and fewer support tickets
<The_Coolest>
fair enough.
<chewitt>
reality is always somewhere between today and a future nirvana :)
<The_Coolest>
Won't work for us till we decide to move over to mainline.
<chewitt>
well, the sooner more people take an interest and push forwards in that direction, the sooner everyone wins
<The_Coolest>
True. But we focus on things that actually work right now.
<The_Coolest>
Anyway, I think this is a bit off topic for this channel
<chewitt>
yes/no :)
<chewitt>
depends on personal perspectives
<chewitt>
i've been running mainline images exclusively since last summer
<chewitt>
it was rather painful at first
<chewitt>
but most of the stuff that I play works now
<chewitt>
not all, but most

and while many users arrive in forums with huge "must have" feature lists
<chewitt>
the totally inferior RPi3 is still 10x more popular among LE users than any of the more capable available hardware
<The_Coolest>
Yes. I know
<The_Coolest>
I'm sure mainline is improving, and it will eventually get there. But I don't see it being anywhere close to feature parity with the available vendor kernel right now.
<chewitt>
the stateful code path in Kodi/ffmpeg still needs a load of work, but once the Pi Foundation stop fiddling with the current GBM/MMAL hack it will lurch forwards
<spycat`>
Amlogic mainline is crap, let's not pretend otherwise
<The_Coolest>
phew
TomTom has joined #libreelec
<chewitt>
I guess we should all abandon hope and stop working on it then :)
<spycat`>
I think we should stop pretending how great it is for a start
<chewitt>
it's good enough for one of the worlds largest companies to bet their next product on
<chewitt>
albeit with a focus on Android not Linux
<chewitt>
but still work in progress
<The_Coolest>
I'm all for mainline. All I'm saying is that it's still way off from being passable as something that really works well, at least on AML

I'm an optimist so I agree that it's not in a state of perfection, and I agree that kernel-time moves slowly, but I also believe it's more usable that nay-sayers give credit for, and I strongly believe the more people take and interest and start contributing to its future state, the sooner we (all) reach it
<vpeter>
chewitt: now that you are here. The forum is still behaving crazy. User is blocked and still can make new post. This seems wrong to me.
<vpeter>
not to mention annoying :(
Fenster has quit [Ping timeout: 245 seconds]
<chewitt>
not my area of admin expertise, but which user, which URL?
<chewitt>
most of this stuff comes from a human user registering accounts and copy/pasting text
<chewitt>
there are no URLs to trigger the moderation rules for first posts etc.
<chewitt>
and because it's a human the anit-bot controls are bypassed
<vpeter>
But I blocked this user and after time new posts was made. And visible to public.
<chewitt>
how are you blocking?
<chewitt>
the only thing that works is an account ban
<chewitt>
(which is now done)
<vpeter>
what is "account ban"? I did block this user. Is there some other function?
<chewitt>
I think block means "prevent this user from contacting me" .. it's not a ban
<chewitt>
i.e. stops them from PM'ing you
<vpeter>
Ah.
<vpeter>
Then I will just stop looking at those spams.
<chewitt>
on the user screen the 'gear' icon has warn/ban/block controls
<chewitt>
not sure what rights are needed for bans
<vpeter>
That's explains it. Thanks.
<chewitt>
some of the terminology used in burning board isn't brilliantly translated into English from the original German
<chewitt>
i''ve nagged @cvh to look at rights/roles to ensure mods have ban rights
<chewitt>
I'll also bump my thread in the woltlab feature-request forum asking for a "ban and remove all posts" feature .. there's a few +1's on the thread now
<chewitt>
but they are still pretending their anti-spam controls are perfect, so there's resistance to implementing it
<chewitt>
anyway.. I have a conference call in 20 mins and need to pre some things
<chewitt>
laters all ..

Hi everyone! I have a question about Netflix addon (CastagnaIT repo) and LE 9.0.2. We have a strange issue while resuming a video. The screen goes black, we have just have audio. As if the audio and video can't sync...
<Smeulf>
Are you aware of such an issue ?
<Smeulf>
(On rapsberri Pi3)

Forgot to mention it works very fine on the same RPi with Kodi 9.0.1

vpeter: the system boots, i see it on the network and can ping it but no ssh and no kodi starting up
<philn>
seems like the monitor lost signal indeed
<vpeter>
So it happens same to you.
<vpeter>
You can add ssh to boot parameters and you will have ssh :)
<vpeter>
I think if you press button up or down again and again you will see kodi on tv. Try that.
