<buzzmarshall>
thats what happened with the old sc stuff]
<emOne>
sc?
<buzzmarshall>
smartcard
<emOne>
ahh!!! cool!
<buzzmarshall>
the core mcu in the card is based around a existing arch but with a few added commands
<emOne>
ahh , so that is how things like nagra cards got cloned
<buzzmarshall>
so to model the firmware properly you need to have those commands in the mcu your reversing
<emOne>
what kind of arcitecture were these chips?
<emOne>
yea
<buzzmarshall>
kinde like what is currently going on with the guys trying to create open source drivers for the malis
<buzzmarshall>
there is existing blobs
<buzzmarshall>
the structure of the blobs are known
<buzzmarshall>
whats not known tho is the command set thats tied to the ipcore
<buzzmarshall>
slowly tho as they get figured out then a open source driver can be created
<buzzmarshall>
now thats really simplified explanation but essentially whats going on
<emOne>
that is aweomse
<emOne>
yea
<buzzmarshall>
as they test and figure out things they get better results
<emOne>
I even saw some raspberry pi guys are looking at making open source bootloaders for the pi
<emOne>
which I think is awesome
<buzzmarshall>
but its a big task if your starting from squat
<emOne>
yea
<emOne>
I can only imagine
<emOne>
open source drivers for arm devices will really bring in some fresh air into the arcitecture in my honest opinion
<emOne>
and I really don't think that the arm licensing model has to suffer because of it
<emOne>
photoshop used to be super expensive
<emOne>
so if you were learning you were using pirated copis
<emOne>
and the legit buyers of photoshop were mostly companies such as studio
<emOne>
now they have a model where consumers who only use the spot remover tool can license photoshop and pay a monthly fee
<emOne>
I think it was a win win , for adobe and everyone else
<buzzmarshall>
i always looked at it from the point of view that im not wasting rediculous ammounts of money without knowing it will do what i want
<emOne>
yea
<buzzmarshall>
but if i were to use soemthing to make money off then its time to buy it
<emOne>
yes absolutely
<emOne>
I think photoshop used to be around 1000 usd or so
<emOne>
and people just learning the damn tool didn't spend that money
<buzzmarshall>
i think now its like most where theres a monthly fee that you just keep paying
<emOne>
it was companies, design studios, marketing agencies and the like
<emOne>
yep
<emOne>
if you are a company there are also license fees that you pay for the amount of your workstations
<emOne>
really, I think it is a win win
<emOne>
because now even your average joe who just wants to remove a few specs from his photos will afford it
<emOne>
if you look at the adobe stock price you will see that whatever they are doing it is working
<buzzmarshall>
i agree
<emOne>
they started their subscription model in 2013
<emOne>
go on google an type in "adobe stock price " .. click on "max" to see all the years
<buzzmarshall>
seems like such much software these days have moved to that type of model
<emOne>
and do take a look and notice the gigantic take off after 2013 ;)
<buzzmarshall>
everyones more interested in monthy cash flow
<buzzmarshall>
why sell a yearly stand alone version for say 1000 and then the next year expect customers to repeat
<emOne>
exactly
<buzzmarshall>
most won't they will wait till somethings needed before updating
<emOne>
yep
<emOne>
especially if you have spent 1000
<buzzmarshall>
this monthly thing just gets them all on the hook
<emOne>
lol yea
<emOne>
with the montly thing people will end up paying 1000 usd
<emOne>
even those that were pirating before
<emOne>
but it is a win win imho
<emOne>
when you stop using adobe you can cancel
<emOne>
soo really I think it is quite fair
<buzzmarshall>
from a hackers point its sometimes better as its easier to bypass things but sometimes this monthly model can be a real pain in the butt
<emOne>
lol yea
<buzzmarshall>
online sub checks have lead to some companies making their software authentication setups to be connected to the data centers
<emOne>
it is harder to crack too
<emOne>
brb 2 mins
<emOne>
and updates can break your crack easily
<buzzmarshall>
i didn't buy a particular peice of 3dprinter software because i had read tomany licenced users complaining because the software company was having issues with their servers which prevented the customers client software from running
<buzzmarshall>
so after spending the money to buy it your kinda stuck when their servers are fudgin up
<emOne>
that is also tru
<emOne>
your software is only good as long as the servers stay up
<emOne>
and even if the servers stay up
<emOne>
your outdated software might lose support from the server/manufacturer
<emOne>
and you are stuck with software that doesn't work anymore
<emOne>
I can think of a few games that even that you bought outright would stop working on steam for example
<emOne>
buzzmarshall:
<emOne>
time for me to sleep
<emOne>
It was nice chatting to you as always
<emOne>
got to go
<emOne>
see you aroung

<{HD}>
I wish the watch data was in a file instead of a database. I am going to update to a raspi4 and I think I am going to lose all my watched/unwatched information.
<mack->
Ever hear of restoring a backup, {HD} ? :-)
<{HD}>
I read about the "full" backup which backs up the databases but it also backs up plugins and other things that I would not want to restore
<{HD}>
mack-: if I do a full backup can I pick and choose what gets restored?
<mack->
even if you're switching architecture, you could just do the database without binary addons
<mack->
it depends on your backup method. Or you could choose what you backup and choose what gets restored
<{HD}>
there is also an addon I just found in the backup docs of kodi called "watchedlist" I wil check that out too.
shibboleth has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<mack->
as long as you're not moving the paths of your video sources, the kodi database should keep your watched status
<{HD}>
looks like newer posts in that thread make it seem like it doesn't work anymore.
<mack->
if you're already using nfo files, that might be something to look at. If you have a server on your network already, using MySQL for database sharing among multiple kodis on the network is well supported.
emOne has joined #libreelec
<{HD}>
mack-: I did read about sharing a mysql db but I don't have one up and running already. I guess I could spin up a jail in freenas to run a db. That seems harder for some reason then just storing watch data in a file.
<mack->
Watched statuses in a shared database are not client-specific, though.
<{HD}>
mack-: yea, that would be good. That way if I watch 1/2 a movie upstairs I could watch the remainder downstairs...right?
<mack->
storing things in a file that could possibly be updated simultaneously by multiple clients is asking for trouble. That's one reason why databases exist.
blackest_mamba has quit [Quit: ZNC 1.7.2+deb3 - https://znc.in]
<mack->
correct.
blackest_mamba has joined #libreelec
<{HD}>
mack-: thats a good point. I guess I will read about the shared db again. If I could spin one up in a jail easily enought maybe I should just do that.
<{HD}>
Can I push my existing db to the new 'global' db?
<mack->
it's been a while since I did it, but I *think* it copied by current db to mysql on first run. Maybe :)
<mack->
Someone with more recent memory might be able to chime in
<vpeter>
emOne: Did you talk about censorship on CE forum?
<{HD}>
"Don't create the MySQL databases on your server. Simply set up the MySQL server itself, as Kodi will create the specific databases by itself." so, maybe if I set it up from the device that already has a db it will migrate.
