el3: I would just do the local.conf for now, do a 'bitbake core-image-minimal' to get a feel for the build. Look in tmp/deploy subdirs to see what bitbake does.

T0mW: DL_DIR <-- Should I make this directory?
<el3>
T0mW: you have DL_DIR ?= "${HOME}/YoctoProjectDownloads"
<T0mW>
el3: I would suggest that you make the DL_DIR somewhere in your home dir, that way you can collect source tarballs / git that you don't erase by mistake and have to download them all over again. I do it this way in local.conf: DL_DIR ?= "${HOME}/YoctoProjectDownloads"
<T0mW>
el3: then everything goes into /home/tom/YoctoProjectDownloads/

<nabblet>
hi, i installed gentoo on an olimex olinuxino a20 and crosscompiled your kernel for it. now i ran emerge update (acutally some days ago) and there is an kernel update. currently /usr/src/linux points at 3.14.14 and in addition i have 3.14.31
<nabblet>
now i wonder: are the patches that were applied by you still in the 3.14.31 sources?
<nabblet>
i don't think so (since i assume that the update came from the gentoo guys and they don't know about your patches)
dantob has quit [Quit: dantob]
<nabblet>
acutally i am not really 100% sure what i exactly did. I wrote down the commands but i guess i am not 100% sure of the implications of those commands - so feel free to ask.
<NiteHawk>
nabblet: emerging any gentoo kernel will just install the source files, in your case that's the "mainline" kernel. compiling and actually using that kernel is probably _not_ going to work. you'd need a properly patched kernel source or a very recent mainline (see also: http://linux-sunxi.org/Mainline_Kernel_Howto)
<nabblet>
NiteHawk: ok, so i should leave the mainline kernel alone
<nabblet>
?
<nabblet>
that's what i expected/guessed and wanted to be reassured of
afaerber_ has joined #linux-sunxi
<NiteHawk>
sort of. you simply should rely on the gentoo emerge to 'deploy' a usable kernel source ;)
<NiteHawk>
argh
<NiteHawk>
*shouldn't*
<nabblet>
yep
<nabblet>
also there is a patchfile provided by olimex (manufacturer of my device) so i guess the correct order is to fetch the sunxi sources, patch them with the olimex patch and then compile and deploy.
<nabblet>
sorry if i repeat myself - i just want to make 100% sure i understand things the way they are meant

i'm not familiar with that particular flavor. normally i'd expect a recent linux-sunxi kernel to include those patches already - the device page lists it as "supported". if in doubt, you'd have to inspect and cross-check the relevant source files
<NiteHawk>
but i'd probably simply give it a "maybe it just works?" shot
<nabblet>
NiteHawk: well probalby. i'll have to dig into it anyway... just wanted to checkout my options and the "big picture" beforehand.

not much yet :P mostly tinkering with native arm toolchain and getting familiar with the sunxi SoC pecularities. i'm thinking of making it a tv (hdmi) surf box / media player / retro gaming console (think RetroPie)
