<varu> ahh, damn. figured the '10min late' meant the talk would be 10min late
<varu> guess it related to the announcement
<dal2> Hi, I'm about to pre-order and trying to decide on the modem variant
<dal2> My use case is that, if all goes well, I'll be living in the US for another 3-4 years,
<dal2> then moving out of the country, either Vietnam, somewhere in Europe, or the River Plate
<dal2> The modem can be changed out, right?
<varu> afaik yes they can be swapped; you'd buy two modems, one for US and one providing the greatest compatibility between the other places you listed (and how they rank in your priority/expectation list)
<ZetaR> dal2: The modem can be changed on your order before the part gets ordered, but it isn't designed to be removed from the board and it could cause damage. There are some international variants.
<varu> ^ i may be of course wrong, i was under the impression a swap was physically possible later on, but i have not kept up to date in some time
<dal2> ZetaR: oh okay. Let me look into the various countries then and see what they have
<ZetaR> varu: I believe that what you have said is incorrect. Components are only designed to be reflowed once. It *could* be swapped out by very careful use of a heat gun, but it may cause damage to the board.
<varu> ahh, the modem gets soldered on? i was under the impression it'd be an addon module
<varu> i haven't looked at the docs for some time
<DocScrutinizer51> no, modem alas can't get swapped
<ZetaR> varu: Its relationship to the system is as-if it is a USB dongle (compared to tight integration of processing and memory), but its physical relationship is that it gets soldered to the board.
<dal2> How do I determine if LTE US (USA freq set) works in various foreign countries?
<DocScrutinizer51> yes, modem needs to get soldered
<dal2> various non-US countries I should say :)
<ZetaR> dal2: There are links under the table on http://neo900.org/faq that may be helpful.
<DocScrutinizer51> yes
<DocScrutinizer51> sorry I 'm afk again
<ZetaR> dal2: Someone posted this on the forum thread that is linked there: http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p=1426028&postcount=24
<ZetaR> If the post is correct, then in Vietnam GSM will work with all of the modems, and UTMS will work with all except the PLS8-US variant.
paulk-cccamp has joined #neo900
<ZetaR> The Wiki links have very detailed lists for LTE frequency usage.
<dal2> ZetaR: Thanks, I'm trying to figure out the Wikipedia pages now
<ZetaR> dal2: Sure, unfortunately it is a ton of info to look through.
<dal2> it looks like US LTE definitely won't work in Spain or Germany, my two most likely Europe countries
<ZetaR> What I have heard is that US LTE varient won't really work in Europe and EU LTE varient won't really work in the US.
<dal2> when you buy a Samsung Galaxy in the US, what kind of modem does it come with?
<ZetaR> i.e. you will fall back to non-LTE protocols.
<ZetaR> No idea.
<dal2> oh, so if I pick US LTE for the Neo900, it includes fall-back to certain non-LTE protocols?
<dal2> My US friend recently bought a Samsung something or other that worked when she visited Italy
<ZetaR> Yes, see the table on the FAQ page.
<ZetaR> They all have UMTS and GSM.
<dal2> ZetaR: Ah! That makes a big difference then
<dal2> ZetaR: I wasn't reading the table correctly. Thanks =)
<ZetaR> AFAIK, you will at least get GSM in most places in the world, except the US.
<ZetaR> Some US providers are getting rid of GSM reverse-compatibility from what I have heard in this chat.
<ZetaR> But don't quote me on that.
<dal2> for UMTS, Germany has frequency 2100, band 1
<dal2> the Neo900 PLS8-US has UMTS AWS (1700/2100 MHz) (Bd4)
<ZetaR> So, that would work with all but the PLS8-US modem.
<dal2> lol wow okay damn
<dal2> okay checking out GSM
paulk-cccamp has quit [Ping timeout: 246 seconds]
<dal2> Germany and Spain both have 900 and 1800 GSM according to http://www.worldtimezone.com/gsm.html
<dal2> so does Vietnam
<dal2> and Uruguay. Argentina's got 1900.
<dal2> so yeah it looks like GSM is pretty much everywhere
<edwin> in 3-4 years time you might want a new phone though, perhaps you could buy another Neo900 (or its sucessor) at that time
<dal2> So since PLS8-US gives me GSM, picking US LTE will work since it can fall back?
<ZetaR> Except for Japan and Korea.
<ZetaR> For GSM that is.
<dal2> edwin: yeah good point
<ZetaR> Personally, I intend for my Neo900 to last me for 10+ years.
<ZetaR> dal2: It looks like everything but PLS8-EU will be able to fall back to at worst GSM for almost everywhere.
<dal2> Zeta: okay cool. And PLS8-US is the US LTE modem option, right?
<ZetaR> For some reason PLS8-EU only has two GSM frequencies. I have no idea why.
<ZetaR> has only two*
<ZetaR> dal2: Yes, that would give LTE support in the US.
<ZetaR> And that is a very nice coverage map you linked to.
<edwin> hmm the gemalto pdf link no longer works, looks like they're redirecting through some 3rdparty site

<Arch-TK> DocScrutinizer51: what about feedback about the price?
<DocScrutinizer51> well, there's always feedback that's more or less detailed and elaborated, motivated by reducing the cost. And after 5 to 30 min I usually answer "and that's exactly what Jolla|Samsung are already doing and selling"
<DocScrutinizer51> well, there's always feedback that's more or less detailed and elaborated, motivated by reducing the cost. And after 5 to 30 min I usually answer "and that's exactly what Jolla|Samsung are already doing and selling"
<DocScrutinizer51> there's no use in discussing 'the price', you could discuss technical aspects that might or might not change the pricetag
<Arch-TK> I got my N900 yesterday and it's already doing far better in doing what I want it to do than my current normal android phone. The only issue is the web browser... I'm sure there's a good replacement web browser. In any case. I would very much be interested in something which is basically supposed to be a more powerful more versatile N900. I think I might pay the downpayment next month, then pay 50€ a month
<Arch-TK> until I either reach 800€ or the thing gets finished :P
<Arch-TK> DocScrutinizer51: I don't really care all that much about the price. To be honest it could be lower, but I understand the reasons. I'm just worried about negative feedback about the price which could suggest that you guys might not get the amount of pre-payments you need to continue with the project.
<DocScrutinizer51> we had basically very little (almost none) negative feedback
<Arch-TK> That's good.
<Arch-TK> This talk... Was it recorded / will it be up for watching anywhere?
<DocScrutinizer51> thode are hackers here who build stuff themselves, they understand the calculation
<DocScrutinizer51> of course its recorded and will be online soonish
<Arch-TK> Is it streamed? (I guess not)
<Arch-TK> s/Is it/Are the talks/
<DocScrutinizer51> it been streamed aiui
<DocScrutinizer51> as silly as it may sound: I'm only partly online here. No full sized own workstation, poor cellular, dangerous WLAN and LAN...

<DocScrutinizer51> yes
<Arch-TK> Great. I only speak Polish, English and a bit of French.
