https://lwn.net/Articles/662147/ "Of the billion phones out there, he said, approximately 27 of them have owners who care about running mainline kernels. The rest just want to get the phone to work.". I think the would care about that, and they are more than 27

If I wanted a phone to just work, I would get one of those old nokia ones.

Wizzup: =) remember how long they lasted, on simple NiMh cell packs? ;-)
<Kero>
What if neo900 makes a USB version? Only gsm modem plus the whole controlling, abuse-detecting HW around it? I'm sure compromised HW/SW elsewhere on the USB bus could do nasty things, but so can compromised SW elsewhere on the neo900 phone itself.
<enyc>
Kero: =) one wonders..... nice puzzle.... I'm not convinced current design does everything over USB however.

Kero: i.e. monitor controls are separate parts...

fairly sure current design is not using (or even aimed for) a USB bus for doing everything.
* Kero
is saying that as SW person
<Kero>
on top of that, communication over USB should be well defined for data, voice and SMS. fairly sure a serial-over-USB AT command set will not do.
<Kero>
but there are other USB sticks that provide cellular connections, maybe one of those has an open driver to learn from
<Kero>
what I see as an advantage is a smaller design, fewer parts (so hopefully fewer hard-to-get parts), and generally cheaper to increase amount of people that would be interested in it.
<Wizzup>
Kero: if you just give the serial line from the modem over usb, why not?
<enyc>
Kero: 4g LTE modules tend to look like Ethernet over USB =)
<enyc>
Kero: with all the problems of extra NAT layer ;p
<Wizzup>
but yeah, it's not even close to what neo900 does

how far would "just ethernet + just serial line" get us? what would would we need for the "your modem got hijacked, so the monitor cut the power" and other types of feedback?
