<xakh> hey!
<xakh> can you install Dillo on this thing yet?
<xakh> the nanonote I mean
<xakh> Hey
<xakh> is anyone active in here?
<xiangfu> xakh: hi
<xakh> hey it's you again!
<xakh> so I got the machine online
<xakh> so, xiangfu, since you made the thing for the quake demo
<xakh> xiangfu: now that I got it online, what should I install?
<xakh> so do I wget that?
<xiangfu> xakh:  you better wget in your PC. then "scp" to your NanoNote. :-)
<xakh> I couldn't get that to work as well
<xakh> :(
<xakh> since it's running
<xakh> would it be possible?
<xakh> xiangfu: is there a way to make it show up on the gmenu2x?
<xiangfu> xakh: yes. but you need look into the gmenu2x configure.
<panda|x201> Hi, where is wolfgang?
<xakh> xiangfu: how does one go about that?
<xiangfu> xakh: i don't know. i don't play gmenu2x. I am study the low level coding :-)
<xakh> dang
<xakh> Well, I'm going to go to the bathroom, be right back
<xiangfu> xakh: :-)
<xakh> xiangfu: awesome, I got some popsicles from my minifridge
<xakh> alright
<xakh> xiangfu: important question.
<xakh> do I have to do all of the stuff I did before to connect my nanonote to the net?
<xakh> every time I plug it in?
<xiangfu> xakh: yes. there is some way can do it automatic. search the en.qi-hardware.com or google. I am just write a shell to do that
<xakh> I'm scared to unplug it now....
<xakh> xiangfu: any tips on using opkg?
<xiangfu> xakh: opkg install ***.ipk
<xakh> ohhhh
<xakh> it has to end in .ipk?
<xakh> xiangfu: is .ipk for all files?
<xiangfu> xakh: must ipk
<xakh> didn't work
<wolfspraul> xiangfu: you there?
<xiangfu> wolfspraul: yes
<wolfspraul> when I create an initramfs in openwrt, I see a number of compression options: none, gzip, bzip2, lzma, lzo
<wolfspraul> are they all working? which one is the best/recommended one to work with xbboot?
<xiangfu> wolfspraul: I think "lzma" is better.
<xiangfu> I select the "none"
<xiangfu> wolfspraul: not test those compression
<wolfspraul> ok, thanks! maybe I try a bit...
<xiangfu> wolfspraul: seems the lzma compression code is smallest . I think I read some document somewhere.
<xiangfu> wolfspraul: bzip and lzma compressors give smaller sizes than gzip.  Lzma's decompresses faster than bzip2.
<xiangfu> wolfspraul: from the kernel config file: usr/Kconfig line:133, lzma is better
<larsc> lzma gives better compression, but is slower. so if you have plenty of space it might not be the best option
<foxtrot> hi
<foxtrot> can I hook a usb keyboard to the nn?
<wolfspraul> foxtrot: no, the NanoNote only has a USB client controller, not USB host
<foxtrot> so no ext keyboard options?
<wolfspraul> foxtrot: no I don't think so
<wolfspraul> unless you hook a whole notebook to it, and ssh into the NanoNote :-)
<foxtrot> and there is no expansion on it to ever support a keyboard?
<wolfspraul> foxtrot: on the Ben NanoNote - no. The expansion comes from the microSD slot (SDIO capable), USB client (gadgets)
<wolfspraul> even if theoretically something is imaginable via SDIO, it doesn't work today or in the near future
<foxtrot> should i probably wait for the next version
<foxtrot> i was planning on ordering one today
<wolfspraul> if you really need an external keyboard, then yes I don't know how to do that with the Ben today, or how to encourage you to buy a Ben anyway
<wolfspraul> maybe some others here in the chat have more ideas for you, but I don't
<wolfspraul> foxtrot: what did you plan to do with the Ben?
<foxtrot> assembly dev
<wolfspraul> to do MIPS assembly? You can ssh into the Ben from an Eee PC :-)
<wolfspraul> take the Eee PC as your external keyboard
<foxtrot> indeed
<foxtrot> but it lowers the 'wow' factor
<foxtrot> since i cant bring my keyboard to an internet cafe
<foxtrot> i wonder how hard it is to type on it
<wolfspraul> type on the Ben? most people like the keyboard, but of course it's not full-size
<wolfspraul> for me personally it wouldn't be suitable for programming
<wolfspraul> executing prepared scripts, sure that works well
<wolfspraul> but writing whole programs? nah... :-)
<foxtrot> i mean im using an 8.9" eeepc right now
<foxtrot> im known for typing on tiny keyboards :)
<foxtrot> despite my gargantuan hands
<wolfspraul> no the ben nanonote is a lot smaller!
<wolfspraul> compare it to a blackberry keyboard
<wolfspraul> you cannot do real programming on that keyboard, I would say
<wolfspraul> unless you can do it on a blackberry too...
<foxtrot> much like the theory of computer science
<foxtrot> if given the time, anything is typable :)
<wolfspraul> having said that, most people like the keyboard, I think it's one of the mechanically best part of the product
<wolfspraul> s/part/parts/
<wolfspraul> gotta go, late here...
<wolfspraul> 'night
<Xakh> yo dudes.
<Xakh> so, what's new in the world of the nanonote?
<Xakh> also, how do you set the time?
<larsc> Xakh: date
<Xakh> ok
<Xakh> also
<Xakh> I changed the theme in gmenu2x just now
<Xakh> and now when it boots
<Xakh> instead of going to gui
<Xakh> it acts like it's starting
<Xakh> then the screen blanks
<Xakh> and doesn't work
<Xakh> and now i tried to reset it and the screen went white
<Xakh> and is staying white
<Xakh> anyone had these problems?
<Xakh> hello,
<Xakh> ?
<Xakh> is anyone here?
<Xakh> jlmoko: you have any experience troubleshooting the nanos?
<jlmoko> no but I can try
<Xakh> ok
<Xakh> when i changed my gmenu settings, it messed up
<Xakh> when i boot it acts like it's going to goto gmenu
<Xakh> then the screen goes black and stops responding
<Xakh> should i just reflash?
<jlmoko> could you conect to the nano via usb network
<Xakh> no, i can't even get it to stay working
<Xakh> it runs fine for the first minute
<Xakh> then even if i ctrl alt f1 to terminal
<Xakh> it blank screens
<Xakh> and I'm on my phone so i don't have access to the tools to reflash it atm
<Xakh> and i busted a pencil in the reset
<Xakh> so it keeps resetting
<Xakh> gotta fish that out with a paperclip in a minute
<Xakh> not a good day thus far for me...
<Xakh> you think there's a way to save it, or would reflashing be my only option?
<jlmoko> on the openwrt initial screen can you get a shell just pressing enter  & ctl L
<Xakh> i can't get it to boot right now
<Xakh> something is stuck against the reset button
<Xakh> i get a break in a few minutes, and then i'll grab a paperclip
<Xakh> then i'll try to  use ctrl l
<Xakh> just looking for possible solutions
<Xakh> is there a way to manually edit the gmenu prefs?
<Xakh> like with nano?
<jlmoko> you can also try another chvt ( looks like there arere 8 of them
<Xakh> like with ctrl alt and the f keys, right?
<Xakh> because when i went to different ones the screen still blanked
<jlmoko> yes , also you could edit the gmenu confiles with vi
<jlmoko> or nano or joe no emacs :(
<Xakh> alright
<Xakh> still can't get it booting
<Xakh> aaaahhh
<Xakh> i hope i didn't brick it
<jlmoko> but outside gmenux only alt f1-f8 is necesary
<jlmoko> you see the openwrt screen splash
<Xakh> no, it doesn't even turn on right now
<Xakh> i'm hoping that's due to the reset button
<Xakh> and not it being permanently broken
<Xakh> hm
<Xakh> when i plug it to a power source the red light comes on
<Xakh> so it's at least partly working
<zear> Xakh, sounds like the bootloader wasn't flashed properly
<zear> it happens to me every time i try to flash the device with the flash script
<Xakh> but it worked yesterday
<zear> do it manually and it won't fail
<zear> oh
<jlmoko> I 'll dupt it is broken but you may end using the carbonized ruber
<zear> anyway, you can't brick a nanonote
<Xakh> you promise?
<zear> it has a system-on-chip that is responsible for usb boot mode
<Xakh> awesome.
<zear> so even if you damaged the whole nand you could still switch it to the usbboot and flash nand again
<Xakh> i think something's stuck in the reset button though
<Xakh> like, holding the button down
<Xakh> so would that be causing that?
<zear> Xakh, nah, holding reset constantly makes the screen to turn white
<Xakh> it did that
<Xakh> then it stopped turning on
<zear> battery
<zear> might be completely discharged
<zear> can you boot the system without the battery?
<Xakh> no
<zear> hmm.. can you short the pins and switch the device into the usbboot mode?
<Xakh> i also have none of the extra parts
<zear> and flash u-boot again
<Xakh> i don't have the rubber, i'm stuck somewhere for the next hour
<zear> if it's not turning on, but the red light comes on it means u-boot fails to boot
<zear> ah
<zear> well, you could use the aluminum foil
<Xakh> also, i'm using an android irc client, and don't have my laptop
<Xakh> my troubleshooting's hard...
<Xakh> even with all this
<Xakh> i did do a little nanoproject though
<Xakh> hardware based, not software, though
<Xakh> i made a surge protected charger for the nn
<Xakh> that also doubles as a ups
<Xakh> i can tell you guys how to make one, if you'd like...
<Xakh> well i thought it was cool.
<Xakh> and I'm alone again...
<Xakh> alright
<Xakh> got the pencil lead out
<Xakh> and it booted!
<Xakh> however it still blanks after the openwrt screen
<Xakh> i'm gonna reflash
<xakh> to reflash I just sudo and run the .sh file, right?
<zear> xakh, yes, but i'd recommend the manual flashing
<xakh> alright
<xakh> how do I go about doing that?
<zear> as it seems .sh messes up your u-boot (like it does with mine nanonote)
<zear> it's just a couple of simple commands
<zear> let me point you to the right page on the wiki
<xakh> well mine only messed up after I reconfigured gmenu2x, but still, manual flashing looks good
<zear> you might need to read that page from the beginning, as not sure if the .sh script installs usbboot or not
<xakh> I have xburst tools installed
<zear> but yeah, if you have the "usbboot" command in your system, to flash the u-boot you need to run just this single command:
<zear> sudo usbboot -c "boot;nprog 0 openwrt-xburst-u-boot.bin 0 0 -n"
<zear> of course change the u-boot.bin name to your file
<xakh> what file?
<zear> you need to download the newest u-boot :)
<xakh> ok
<zear> then point the above command to whatever name your u-boot.bin file has
<zear> i guess it's openwrt-xburst-u-boot.bin
<xakh> that one's the newest?
<zear> yep
<xakh> ok
<zear> it's in the "latest" dir so i believe it's the newest you can get
<xakh> do I have to type the address of nanonote?
<zear> nope
<zear> you need to switch it to the usbboot mode
<zear> and usbboot will detect it
<xakh> it's in it
<zear> that's what the first part of this command do, the usbboot-c "boot;
<xakh> ok
<xakh> ah...
<xakh> I'm pretty easily confused, sorry...
<zear> nah, it's just pretty confusing
<zear> but once you get it it's quite simple :)
<xakh> alright
<xakh> so what do I type first?
<zear> first go to the dir where you downloaded your uboot image
<xakh> it's in home so I'm good there.
<zear> then type sudo usbboot -c "boot;nprog 0 your_u-boot_file.bin 0 0 -n"
<zear> of course that will work only if the nanonote is in the usbboot mode and is plugged to the usb
<zear> so switch it to usbboot and plug it in first :)
<xakh> it's already there, I'm glad I figured that out though
<xakh> there's the output
<xakh> just checking if that means it did well
<xakh> zear: would you look over the output and see if it worked?
<zear> looks fine, but you might want to run the command again just to be sure
<xakh> ok
<zear> as it happened to me before that i had to run commands twice to flash
<zear> as the first time, despite no errors in logs, the flashing process failed
<xakh> alright
<zear> if the second log is the same, you can unplug your nanonote
<zear> and see if it works
<xakh> okay
<xakh> heh, I like that the nand size is actually 4096 kb
<xakh> not 4000 kb like most 2gb devices
<xakh> nope
<xakh> still blanks on loading GUI
<zear> anything printed on screen?
<xakh> yeah, the splash
<zear> ok, that's good
<xakh> but even if I move to a different terminal
<zear> it means not only the u-boot was damaged
<xakh> the screen still blanks
<zear> but also the kernel/rootfs
<xakh> oh
<zear> so now you need to flash the rest :)
<xakh> so should I just run the script to test it now?
<xakh> also, I think I dropped the button.
<xakh> oh shit
<xakh> I'll brb
<xakh> dropped the button
<zear> the carbonated one?
<xakh> yeah
<xakh> :O
<zear> it's damn hard to find on a carpet :D
<xakh> luckily I put it in the bag
<xakh> wooot
<xakh> it was stuck on my arm
<zear> anyway, check the rest of commands in that link
<zear> hehe
<zear> i once found it on my t-shirt ;)
<xakh> lol
<zear> as you need to flash the whole thing (kernel/rootfs), i suggest you run all the commands listed in the "Example"
<zear> beginning with erasing the whole nand
<xakh> alrighty
<xakh> did that
<zear> if anywhere during the flashing process you notice the "FAIL" in the logs, run the command again
<zear> until it returns only SUCCESS
<zear> kernel and rootfs can be found in the same link as u-boot: http://downloads.qi-hardware.com/software/images/Ben_NanoNote_2GB_NAND/latest/
<zear> oh, and rootfs is the lb60-uImage.bin, not lb60-rootfs.tgz :)
<xakh> thanks
<zear> err.. wrong
<zear> qi_lb60-root.ubi and not the .tgz one
<zear> uImage.bin is the kernel ;)
<xakh> ok
<xakh> can I add things to the ubi?
<xakh> I was thinking of moving my wallpaper and a few .ogg files
<xakh> which is the coolest wallpaper ever, btw
<xakh> zear: do you know how to modify .ubi files?
<xakh> okay, flashed the second part
<xakh> and flashed it twice
<xakh> to be sure
<xakh> now for the rootfs
<zear> xakh, nah, i know nothing about .ubi format
<xakh> dang
<zear> but i'm sure some other guys on this channel know about it
<xakh> oh well
<zear> as for the rootfs, flashing takes a while, so i don't know if you want to flash it twice :)
<xakh> the cp command works well
<zear> nice wallpaper :)
<xakh> I thought so
<zear> you can change your wallpaper in gmenu2x btw
<xakh> :P
<zear> no need to manually overwrite the files
<xakh> I know, it was on the nano
<xakh> the cp command takes too long
<xakh> hey frank
<xakh> btw I got the net working
<FrankBlues> excellent!
<xakh> then I changed a bunch of settings and bricked meself, so now I'm reflashing
<xakh> oh btw, the google home page is a playable game of pac man today
<xakh> I think the coin command is 3
<xakh> if not it's 1 or 2
<zear> xakh, oh it's playable?
<xakh> since I hit those and it let me play
<xakh> yeah
<xakh> awesome right>
<xakh> ?
<zear> yep :)
<xakh> ok
<xakh> rootfs is almost done flashing
<xakh> these things are indestructable
<FrankBlues> Mine had "insert coin" where the random link button usually is
<xakh> hah
<xakh> pacman claims another victim
<xakh> oop, there you are
<zear> xakh, it even has a 2 player mode :D
<xakh> I know, bad ass right?
<FrankBlues> argh, trying to add a server in irssi, not change servers
<zear> xakh, totally
<xakh> hey, so if anyone's interested, I designed a Q&D surge protected charger for the nanonote
<xakh> I can show you guys the parts necessary to make it
<zear> what's a surge protected charger?
<xakh> basically, the power is regulated
<xakh> so if there's a power surge and it's not plugged into a surge protector (which is one of those things that you plug in with all the extra outlets)
<xakh> it'll keep the power surge from reaching the nn
<zear> of course parts/schemes/howtos are welcome :)
<xakh> well, it's pretty simple
<zear> as long as they have an open license, feel free to upload them on the wiki
<xakh> well, it's basically three pieces
<xakh> first, you have the USB cable, of course
<xakh> then you have this
<xakh> and that
<xakh> when you put them together
<xakh> the charger charges the mini battery first, then charges the NN
<xakh> so if there's a power outage
<xakh> not only is the nn protected
<xakh> but it has a little extra juice
<zear> sounds cool
<xakh> yeah, it worked well
<zear> so basically the middle part is a kind of a battery?
<FrankBlues> brb
<xakh> yup
<xakh> you plug the cable into the wall adapter
<xakh> and then the battery
<xakh> and then you plug the battery into the nano
<zear> and you can take the battery with you to charge your nanonote when there's no power outlet around. Clever :)
<xakh> yeah, I'd picked it up for my phone
<xakh> but it was easily repurposed
<xakh> it also has a little flash light on it, not related to the surge protectore
<xakh> and I don't know why it has one
<xakh> but there's a button, and it turns on a bright white led
<xakh> so it has that too
<xakh> I like it.
<zear> quite handy
<xakh> okay
<xakh> it reflashed
<xakh> wish me luck!
<xakh> woot!
<xakh> it booted!
<FrankBlues> good luck!
<xakh> where's the directory for the wallpapers on gmenu2x again?
<xakh> the directory for wallpapers is /usr/share/
<xakh> what comes after that?
<xakh> anyone?
<kristianpaul> xakh: the file i think
<kristianpaul> just put it there
<xakh> found out it takes forever to get to
<kristianpaul> why?
<xakh> it's /user/share/gmenu2x/Default/wallpapers
<xakh> hey, anyone here good with packaging for the nanonote?
<xakh> hey
<xakh> does anyone have like, a shell script
<xakh> to add new files to gmenu2X?
<xakh> I really wanna add prboom.
<wolfspraul> maybe zear knows, but he's probably sleeping :-)
<xakh> damnation!
<xakh> all the geniuses slumber.
