that makes me pretty confident that it's not river's fault but something wlroots is doing wrong which is fixed/hidden by the damage tracking code

I tried to launch river with WAYLAND_DEBUG=1 too but there is no other error with this

I wouldn't expect WAYLAND_DEBUG=1 to give more information here, that will show wayland protocol operation/errors not DRM/KMS errors
