<Lord_Nightmare> ValleyBell: wait, so yamaha screwed up the opl4 and the attack phase is different for all fm sound, and nobody NOTICED until now? wtf?
<Lord_Nightmare> now i'm wondering of the opl3lv ymf289 also has that 'fix'
<Lord_Nightmare> i had assumed the opl3lv was just a 3.3v variant of the ymf262
<Lord_Nightmare> and other than the voltage level difference, there was no real change in the behavior
<cr1901_modern> ej5: Time to crowdfund an Adlib gold for you :P?
<Wohali> indeed
<Lord_Nightmare> doesn't adlib gold use an oki adpcm chip?
<Lord_Nightmare> or is it a yamaha adpcm chip
<Lord_Nightmare> i forget
<Lord_Nightmare> it may be yamaha, a pcmd8 variant
<Lord_Nightmare> Wohali: you could also ask trixter if he'll let you borrow his card
<Wohali> Lord_Nightmare: i could! he hasn't yet returned my email to him.
<Wohali> i know he's busy.
<Lord_Nightmare> he just had a blog post about 'quitting the scene' due to health issues
<Wohali> yeah i saw that
<Lord_Nightmare> so you might be better off tweeting at him
<Lord_Nightmare> or dm'ing him
<Wohali> ah, i forgot about twitter. yeah i could tyr that.
<Wohali> but i am not going to ask him for his adlib gold card just so i can clone it ;) i want to catch up, it's been far too long
<Wohali> oh dear, he helped out 8bitguy? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Lk5LeVAdoI
<cr1901_modern> oh dear?
<Wohali> i have mixed feelings about 8bitguy. but at least he's learning
<fseidel> what, his treatment of vintage hardware?
<cr1901_modern> https://twitter.com/gravislizard/status/1114700501394776064 s/LGR/LGR and 8-bit guy/ and you have a first order approximation of my feelings
<cr1901_modern> oh wait I linked this thread here I think
<cr1901_modern> wish I could delete IRC msgs
<Wohali> fseidel: amongst other things
<fseidel> "I'm gonna take a garden hose to this"
<Wohali> Lord_Nightmare: ah, he won't accept DMs apaprently, so I tried pinging him publicly. we'll see
<fseidel> s/garden hose/power washer
<Wohali> thx for the reminder
<cr1901_modern> I've heard there's been a lot of in-fighting with the ppl who agreed to develop his dream 65816 computer
<Wohali> personality cults bad
<fseidel> man, why can't people just get along :'(
<Wohali> fseidel: dremel it out and put an arduino inside
<fseidel> wait he did that
<cr1901_modern> fseidel: B/c the temptation to wield esoteric knowledge like a cudgel is very real
<fseidel> Wohali: what did he dremel out?
<Wohali> oh i am not sure who specifically did that. but it comes up often
<Wohali> bigclive: gets apass because he tears apart cheap chinese shit to figure out how it works
<fseidel> yeah, clive is great
<Wohali> and teaches, generally. plus is just a little cheeky for fun
<cr1901_modern> https://c256foenix.com This is probably pretty close to the retro-inspired computer I would design
<fseidel> I can't say I'd go with an 816, hate the ISA
<fseidel> I'd probably go for a 68K-based machine
<fseidel> actually, I'm curious, 816 people, why do you like that chip?
<cr1901_modern> I have affection for under-utilized chips
<cr1901_modern> (under-utilized in contemporary times*)
<fseidel> okay, motorola 88K ;-)
<cr1901_modern> well, '816 is somehow still in production, so that's also a bonus :P
<cr1901_modern> 68k has the superior assembly language, but it's insn encoding is absolutely horrific
<fseidel> I just can't get behind the weird segmentation crap
<fseidel> yeah the encoding is pretty bad, I'll give you that
<Wohali> bring bak the 88k
<cr1901_modern> Never used it... I want a 68k system, but many of them are very expensive.
<cr1901_modern> I'll prob get a Quadra and throw NetBSD on it
<cr1901_modern> since that's fairly cheap
<cr1901_modern> I would do crimes for an x68k but HOOOOOLY SHIT the prices
<fseidel> yeah they got nuts
<fseidel> I have a broken one in my closet that desperately needs a recap
<Wohali> i hear you can be gay and do crimes
<fseidel> getting one in working shape is absolutely insane
* cr1901_modern was waiting for someone to prepend "be gay" :P
<Wohali> fseidel: i know a nice little shop in tokyo that sells working ones ;)
<Wohali> and, of course, there's always yahoo auctions
<fseidel> yes, but at what price?
<fseidel> I'm assuming you're referring to Beep?
<Wohali> aye
<cr1901_modern> ahh right, the FM synth gacha place?
<Wohali> i found some on yahoo not that long ago that were functional. about 3man
<fseidel> 3man?
<Wohali> 30000 yen
<Wohali> about $300
<fseidel> ah
<fseidel> yeah, that's not TOO terrible, although you really need at least 2MB RAM or you won't be able to run any of the games
<fseidel> and finding RAM for the 1MB models is a pain in the ass
<Wohali> yeah i didn't look closely at the specs. but they come up semi-often there.
<fseidel> CMU computer club has a single working X68K and 3 broken ones we're in the process of restoring
<fseidel> so if you're ever in pittsburgh cr1901_modern, feel free to stop by and try one out
<cr1901_modern> Prob need 8-12MB to run NetBSD
<fseidel> yeah
<fseidel> and an 030
<cr1901_modern> thanks will keep that in mind
<fseidel> and not just an x68030, you need to upgrade that to a full 030 because the machine ships with an EC030
<fseidel> but NetBSD needs MMU
<cr1901_modern> NetBSD on my 486 fits into 20MB (with plenty to spare) last I checked
<cr1901_modern> And I still see plenty of demos from the 68k maintainers on hellsite- err, twitter
<fseidel> wait, there are demos?
<cr1901_modern> using luna68k or x68k
<fseidel> like, demoscene
<fseidel> ?
<cr1901_modern> not game demos
<cr1901_modern> stuff like running mikutter
<fseidel> ah, ok
<cr1901_modern> did you ever want Miku Hatsune, but she's a mascot for a Twitter client? That's mikutter
<fseidel> lol, that's oddly specific
<cr1901_modern> I'm still waiting for USB-4.0 tan
<cr1901_modern> if it werent using Altera parts, I'd highly consider building this
<fseidel> oooh, very nice
<fseidel> that's REALLY cool
<cr1901_modern> It's all through-hole components

<TD-Linux> just wait for my x68k accelerator
<TD-Linux> I got a broken xvi for ~$450 off yaj
<ValleyBell> Lord_Nightmare: I always thought that the attack phase being different was intentional. Due to the logarithmic volume table, it IIRC results in the attack phase being linear and decay/sustain/release are logarithmic.
<Sarayan> isn't the volume table exponential too?
<ValleyBell> right, the volume table is exponential (db-like scale), I just confused it
<Sarayan> happens :-)
<Sarayan> scan on
<Sarayan> gah, wrong window
<Wohali> wax on. wax off.

<Lord_Nightmare> hi nukeykt
<Lord_Nightmare> what's up?
<nukeykt> hi, not much
* cr1901_modern is still playing w/ openmucom88 because of course he is
<Lord_Nightmare> cr1901_modern: if you can poke onitama enough that they release the patch editor source... that would be a handy utility (plus i want to fix the linear/exp attack visual thing because it bugs my OCD)
<cr1901_modern> The patch editor is not onitama's code
<Lord_Nightmare> ah, that explains it.
<Lord_Nightmare> and its probably too complex to decompile/etc, i assume...
<cr1901_modern> decompiling a windows or linux app is not something I do in my spare time
<Lord_Nightmare> i've been messing with ghidra...

<cr1901_modern> your alt irssi name (whitequa1k) came in, but when that name timed out, your usual name didn't come back
