ChanServ changed the topic of ##yamahasynths to: Channel dedicated to questions and discussion of Yamaha FM Synthesizer internals and corresponding REing. Discussion of synthesis methods similar to the Yamaha line of chips, Sound Blasters + clones, PCM chips like RF5C68, and CD theory of operation are also on-topic. <whitequark> superb seller
<whitequark> never sent me a fake or remarked chip
<l_oliveira> thanks, I will recommend this person instead of utsource from now on
<l_oliveira> they carry chips like Yamaha stuff?
<whitequark> yeah
<whitequark> i just got 5 more from them
<whitequark> (5 P/Ns, not 5 ICs)
<whitequark> not pulls, not blacktopped
<superctr> lol
<superctr> i got fake chips from utsource
<superctr> can't trust anyone
<l_oliveira> my OPNAs came from UTOURCE, they were legit (not sanded, random datecodes) but one was faulty and they did look like they were "embellished pulls" at least they had the original markings
<superctr> in the end i try to get chips from local sellers, i avoid having to deal with customs too (in sweden they got a lot stricter recently, and the post office takes a "processing fee" for every non-EU package too)
<l_oliveira> I don't mind used chips as long they're working
<superctr> they are all pulls
<l_oliveira> yeah I know
<superctr> finding actual NOS isn't that easy anymore
<l_oliveira> the VRC7s I know they were NOS because these were super ultra dedicated chips
<l_oliveira> they looked pristine and virgin
<l_oliveira> (pins look like chemically plated on new chips I suppose one can tell with visual inspection)
<superctr> the YM3012s we got from utsource were legit though, had random datecodes (some with old and some with new format), though clearly worn and they were pulls
<l_oliveira> fake 3012s actually work good in place of legit ones, it's the 2151 that is a problem lol
<l_oliveira> I suppose the 3012 is simple enough to make decent fakes out of
<superctr> perhaps the fake ones may even be better
<superctr> the original 3012 has a bit of a reputation
<l_oliveira> these Yamaha DACs are hard to properly design with...
<l_oliveira> open signal loops with op amps are really good noise antennas, you know

<cr1901_modern> How does one get "not pulls" in 2019?
<ej5> specify that in the order notes
<cr1901_modern> I guess it's plausible that ppl have NOS around, but I didn't think Yamaha chips would be a common source of NOS
<whitequark> cr1901_modern: ej5: i never bothered specifying "not pulls" to hifiic
<whitequark> btw that seller told me they might be able to find other yamaha chips if i asked
<whitequark> though it might just be something they tell everyone
<cr1901_modern> Few ppl in here are interested in the OPS chip (the one in the DX7- can't remember the part nunber. It's two chips; the phase gen and env gen)
<whitequark> oh yea
<whitequark> might ask
<ej5> ooh hifiic has saa1099 chips
<cr1901_modern> oooh nice
<ej5> the one in the pic looks legit
<cr1901_modern> I'll have to get some for my Bandsaw Duster
<whitequark> whats saa1099?
<ej5> it's a chip for generating nasty buzzing sounds
<whitequark> oh btw
<whitequark> the other good seller i found is u-barn https://www.ebay.com/usr/u-barn
<cr1901_modern> whitequark: Before the Sound Blaster, you had Adlib. But between Adlib and Sound Blaster, you had the Creative Music System, which used saa1099s
<whitequark> they sell......... aquarium supplies?!!
<whitequark> and camera parts/accessories.
<whitequark> totally normal ebay seller
<cr1901_modern> propane and propane accessories
<whitequark> oh looks like they're out of yamaha stuff
<whitequark> is this an "aquarium product" or "philips sonicare toothbrush"
<cr1901_modern> It's both... they're the pioneers of creating toothbrushes for your pet piranhas. They got a huge contract w/ Altera, didn't you hear :D?
<whitequark> wtf is NEC D7759C and why do i watch it?
<cr1901_modern> Speech synthesizer
<whitequark> oh huh
<whitequark> unrelated: i posted about hifiic's ym3812 listing on twitter and
<whitequark> *all* of his sells were from that tweet
<ej5> lol
<whitequark> $170 which is i guess not much in the grand scale of things
<whitequark> what are the YM part numbers for OPS?
<cr1901_modern> 21280 (OPS)/21290 (EGS)
<cr1901_modern> they need to be bought as a pair to be usable
<whitequark> right
<cr1901_modern> Someone RE'd the register map, but has decided not to share it until later... ah well.
<whitequark> sent a rfq to hifiic.
<l_oliveira> isn't D7759C some sort of ADPCM?
<l_oliveira> it is used on SEGA System 16 for PCM sounds and voices
<l_oliveira> datasheet make it look like some sort of adpcm rom sampler
<superctr> also used in sega pico
<l_oliveira> oh and SEGA System C if I remember well
<superctr> yes
<superctr> to compensate for the missing Z80
<cr1901_modern> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VnsD11qcd5E Also whatever this board is, it uses D7759C chip
<superctr> that's gradius 2
<superctr> though i think it uses a custom PCM chip for music and the NEC chip only for voice samples
<ValleyBell> >whitequark: whats saa1099? <-- it's a 6-channel square wave stereo sound chip
<ValleyBell> It's a pretty neat chip, actually - sort of a hybrid between AY8910 and SN76496.
<ValleyBell> and it lets you control the volume for the left and right speakers separately per channel. (i.e. not just hard-panning like OPx chips)
<cr1901_modern> Note for new hardware synths using Yamaha tech panning is a non-issue... it would take minimal resources on an FPGA to pan two channels for you in nice increments. My hypothetical new Yamaha synth also has a programmable LPF since synths are basically required by law to have those
<l_oliveira> technology is sure impressive hehe. make your own chips at home with an fpga
