ChanServ changed the topic of ##yamahasynths to: Channel dedicated to questions and discussion of Yamaha FM Synthesizer internals and corresponding REing. Discussion of synthesis methods similar to the Yamaha line of chips, Sound Blasters + clones, PCM chips like RF5C68, and CD theory of operation are also on-topic. <andlabs> oh I could swear I saw a phillips marking on the chip in someone else's video
<andlabs> anyway tonight's weird retrocomputing acquisition: https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/-ZsAAOSwgCNf-OEe/s-l1600.jpg
<andlabs> a dedicated chess computer based on the KIM-1 that uses an early MOS microcontroller
<cr1901_modern> ahh that's cute
<cr1901_modern> I used to have a computer that played chess. I suck at chess so it always beat me
<cr1901_modern> Wonder what CPU it used
<cr1901_modern> http://www.ismenio.com/chess_d1500.html >ROM 256 bytes. Uhhh
<cr1901_modern> http://www.spacious-mind.com/html/designer_1500.html Ahhh okay, 80C50, 4kB ROM, 256 RAM
<cr1901_modern> Yea, I was beaten by this shit consistently. On level 1.
<andlabs> [22:14:13] <cr1901_modern> http://www.ismenio.com/chess_d1500.html >ROM 256 bytes. Uhhh
<cr1901_modern> yea they swapped the numbers I think
<andlabs> not unreasonable
<cr1901_modern> wow ._.
<TD-Linux> ej5, btw I rejuved my nec multisync this week and it's much improved. worth considering if yours has a lot of hours on it
<ej5> yeah mine is...a bit long in the tooth.
<ej5> 1401 or 1402?
<TD-Linux> 1401
<TD-Linux> standard neck connector, pins are in a bit different order than usual
<ej5> you have the whole monitor or just the tube?
<TD-Linux> whole monitor
<TD-Linux> 1401p3a in particular
<TD-Linux> I have also added the G1 circuit into mine that was omitted at the factory, however compared to the juve, it provides only marginal improvements
<ej5> G1 circuit?
<TD-Linux> puts a negative bias on G1
<ej5> hmm interesting
<TD-Linux> this is something I'm slowly figuring out but a lot of monitors seem to ground G1, but a few put a negative bias (around -20 to -70 V) on it
<TD-Linux> it basically trades brightness for sharpness
<TD-Linux> see the g1 mod section here http://mikejmoffitt.com/pages/ms9-hax/
<ej5> huh, neat. well lmk if you ever want to get rid of the monitor (but why would you ever do that?)
<TD-Linux> I was considering it before the rejuve, but not now :)
<TD-Linux> my sharp cz-613 still handily beats it in image quality (though the sharp is technically trisync rather than multisync)
