andlabs: this may seem obvious, but are you formatting the disks to 1.2mb before dd'ing a 1.2mb image over them?
<andlabs>
and yes at 1.2mb formatting with ufiformat -- the game boots but the FM sound is bad, and I wasn't sure if it was just an incompatibility with my particular PC-98, but then I tried a DSDD 720k floppy disk for the Atari ST, writing a 320kb disk image twice, and on real hardware the root directory appears to be one of the subdirectories somehow

<TD-Linux>
scsi MO drives seem to also have some sort of low level formatting. NEC format / X68000 format can do it but Windows cannot
