ChanServ changed the topic of ##yamahasynths to: Channel dedicated to questions and discussion of Yamaha FM Synthesizer internals and corresponding REing. Discussion of synthesis methods similar to the Yamaha line of chips, Sound Blasters + clones, PCM chips like RF5C68, and CD theory of operation are also on-topic. Channel logs: https://freenode.irclog.whitequark.org/~h~yamahasynths

<cr1901_modern> Foone: So TIL that Philips CDis _also_ have something similar to those god-awful clock modules: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A_6jngyO8TY&t=174s
<cr1901_modern> It's a pity- CDi preservation is in an abysmal state and probably will always be that way. Very few people unironically like the console. Programming for it and creating an emulator is a mess. Hardware is shoddy and dying.
<andlabs> at least the clock modules don't store actual game data
<andlabs> it's just a really shitty design

<Lord_Nightmare> cr1901_modern: not the same afaik; the cd-i clock module just holds RTC and battery backed ram for saving games, it doesn't store the actual OS

<cr1901_modern> Lord_Nightmare: I wasn't thinking of the Suicide Battery, but rather those Dallas Clock Modules on old PC clones
<cr1901_modern> if those die, the BIOS refuses to boot on my PS/2 at least
<Lord_Nightmare> depends on the ps/2: model 50 and 55sx i think won't boot, and 55sx won't boot if the chip is replaced and the contents are zeroed due to a bug/misfeature
<Lord_Nightmare> it thinks the checksum is valid and it isn't so even if you boot the system setup diskette and set hdd boot it will still boot to ROM basic only
<Lord_Nightmare> you have to actually intentionally corrupt the nvram contents before it will behave properly
<Lord_Nightmare> likely a bios bug
<andlabs> Fun
<andlabs> at least with the CD-i replacing the battery will fix it
<Foone> have you seen my threads on the videonics editors? it's an x86 system which may be storing some boot code on an SRAM chip
<Foone> dallas semiconductor made a little adapter you can put between an SRAM chip and a socket, which builds a little battery into it. so when the power is off, it keeps the SRAM active
<cr1901_modern> Oh I thought it was one of those Dallas Clock Modules
<cr1901_modern> So it really is a suicide battery then
<andlabs> on the videonics yes
<andlabs> on the CD-i no
<andlabs> it's just that the CD-i firmware is badly written and doesn't respond to a dead SRAM battery well
<andlabs> and they embedded the battery in the chip's cap because Good Design
<andlabs> it's also a Phillips proprietary part and not a Dallas chip

<cr1901_modern> It was an analogy lol
<cr1901_modern> Actually wait
<cr1901_modern> I'm sorry
<cr1901_modern> the video _says_ it's a Dallas part IIRC
<cr1901_modern> it's not? :o
