ChanServ changed the topic of ##yamahasynths to: Channel dedicated to questions and discussion of Yamaha FM Synthesizer internals and corresponding REing. Discussion of synthesis methods similar to the Yamaha line of chips, Sound Blasters + clones, PCM chips like RF5C68, and CD theory of operation are also on-topic. <andlabs>
but good to know
<andlabs>
oh on the subject of odd computers, this morning I bought an SGI Altix 350 -- because why stop at one odd elusive thing (SGI) when you can have two (Itanium CPU) in one
<andlabs>
(and it was super cheap this time too)
<andlabs>
it's not an HP Integrity so it won't run VMS and IDK if it can run Windows IA-64 but it can run Linux (which isn't surprising because that's what SGI shipped with it)
<cr1901_modern>
Do you like buy a new vintage computer each week :P?
<cr1901_modern>
Maybe I'm a fake fan, but I haven't bought a vintage computer since early 2014 (Compaq Portable I whose keyboard I couldn't save)
<protosphere>
i still have to get around to fixing my portable at some stage too
<whitequark>
my raccoon ex-roommate once gave me a type 3 model m his father stole from somewhere back in soviet union
<whitequark>
only supports the mainframe scan code set
<cr1901_modern>
wow
<whitequark>
wait, no, not stole
<whitequark>
even wilder
<whitequark>
he found it on a garbage dump in a village quite far removed from anywhere you'd think a mainframe could be in
<whitequark>
so *someone else* probably stole it, tried to get it to work, couldn't
<whitequark>
which only became obvious decades later after i plugged glasgow into it lol
<cr1901_modern>
Right, "Scan Code 3", the second scan code to be developed :D

My Compaq Portable PCB is bent slightly, so it causes the micro to go haywire. The PCB is powered from 12V straight into a 5V linear regulator (ahh, the 80s). >>
<cr1901_modern>
The regulator normally connects to a metal bar that's part of the enclosure. But it makes diagnosing faults... a challenge
<protosphere>
could you somehow just connect a normal xt keyboard to it
<protosphere>
or is it entirely different
<cr1901_modern>
Voltage is different, connector is different (and Idk the connector type), but otherwise yes it's compatible
<cr1901_modern>
lemme see if I can find a pic
<protosphere>
hm, maybe i could do that with mine if the keyboard ends up not working (which i assume is pretty likely)
<protosphere>
the main thing that's been stopping me is that even if i get the actual computer working, i still have to do the keyboard etc
<cr1901_modern>
Not gonna say "it will happen", but... the keyboard was working when I got it. It started immediately falling apart after I started using it :P. And I need a second kit; my first one didn't work properly.
