ChanServ changed the topic of ##yamahasynths to: Channel dedicated to questions and discussion of Yamaha FM Synthesizer internals and corresponding REing. Discussion of synthesis methods similar to the Yamaha line of chips, Sound Blasters + clones, PCM chips like RF5C68, and CD theory of operation are also on-topic. <protosphere> i think the best option would be to just try a vga cable
<andlabs> yeah
<andlabs> I'll get one now then
<andlabs> also I was wrong, the screws ARE different

<protosphere> if you have an ossc that is probably preferable over direct vga due to https://gamesx.com/wiki/doku.php?id=x68000:fixing_rgb_output
<protosphere> personally i haven't experienced any issues with direct vga to an lcd (or crt) though
<andlabs> yes I have OSSC
<andlabs> hmm
<andlabs> the battery in that picture is 3.6V; coin cells are 3V
<protosphere> yeah also don't use a cr2032, the nicd actually gets charged, doesn't it?
<andlabs> I don't know
<protosphere> supposedly that one you linked includes a circuit to stop charging
<andlabs> right now it's at 0.20V after the computer has been plugged in for a few hours total during this debugging
<protosphere> you can probably(?) wire in a battery holder for 3 1.2v nicds?
<andlabs> that'll be better then
<andlabs> yeah I'll just go for the vga cable then
<andlabs> *only
<andlabs> from the same seller, unless you have a better suggestion
<protosphere> does the monitor get sync at all?
<protosphere> it'd be worth just going through and verifying if you have sync at the x68000 output, whether the monitor syncs, and also whether you get any video data out of the x68k
<andlabs> yeah I see signals, includinga 60hz signal at the Vsync pin
<protosphere> anything on the rgb lines?
<andlabs> yes
<andlabs> I'm not sure what the signals actually mean, but I see activity
<protosphere> assume it boots you should see mostly black with a white (with text) area in the center
<andlabs> yeah
<andlabs> and I'm not seeing that message
<andlabs> so I'll try again with the vga cable when I get it
<andlabs> assuming that the one I linked is a good one
<andlabs> unless you have a bette rsuggestion for one
<protosphere> i've just used self-wired ones, or the sanwa adapters work too. it probably doesn't matter too much so long as it's wired correctly
<andlabs> ok
<protosphere> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wlMTbIPdxNA&t=2275s might serve as a good reference for what your video output should look like on the scope
<protosphere> er, t=2078
<protosphere> as for the battery it's probably worth doing some research just so you're sure whatever solution you use is safe
<andlabs> oh yeah I'm not seeing anything square-y
<andlabs> but I could be using the oscilloscope wrong
<andlabs> I wasn't seeing anything square-y on the C128 either
<andlabs> also sorry for acting all rage-y about this
<protosphere> ok another thing to check - do you get the HIGH RESO. LED come on?
<protosphere> tbh if nothing there lights up but the power button is functional (starts the psu) it might just be bad connections to the leds or something

<andlabs> I saw that come on on its own once
<andlabs> the last time I worked on this
<andlabs> but now it only operates manually with the respective button
<andlabs> labelled WIDE on my monitor
<andlabs> oh wait you meant on the unit itself -- no
<andlabs> and probably
<andlabs> I also have this thread
<andlabs> which doesn't seem to match my situation, but does imply that the ATX connector also doesn't have enough current through?
<andlabs> *for anything
<andlabs> not just the disk drives
* andlabs tries backing up the HDD on PC-98 laptop now
<andlabs> might as well do so
<andlabs> or not, because the special enclosure it has needs screws and my screwdrivers are too big somehow
<protosphere> with the x68k it might be worth just slowly going through and checking things like your psu voltages (when under load) and the various clocks (the thread mentions the oscillator can be an issue)
<protosphere> seems a bit odd that all these things are going wrong if it was working prior to the psu failure
<protosphere> your drive 0 access light (near the label) should also be flashing in a proper boot - the other should be not lit
<andlabs> that was happening before
<andlabs> in fact that added to the confusion because I thought it was the power light for some reason
