ChanServ changed the topic of ##yamahasynths to: Channel dedicated to questions and discussion of Yamaha FM Synthesizer internals and corresponding REing. Discussion of synthesis methods similar to the Yamaha line of chips, Sound Blasters + clones, PCM chips like RF5C68, and CD theory of operation are also on-topic. Channel logs: https://freenode.irclog.whitequark.org/~h~yamahasynths
<protosphere> the alligator clip is a ground (mains earth in a bench scope) lead usually, whereas the hook tip is what you connect to the ic pin (or whatever)
<protosphere> assuming it's the usual type with a bnc connector on the other end
<andlabs> yeah
<andlabs> apparently I can remove the hook at the end of the rpboe too

<fseidel> cr1901_modern: fun that the next step of the demoscene seems to be bots that run tiny code snippets on twitter

<cr1901_modern> fseidel: I got into sizecoding briefly last year. Made an EGA heart in _way too many_ bytes using raw EGA writes. Also, it had many bugs.
<cr1901_modern> So I'm not entering any demos anytime soon

<cr1901_modern> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t7k5ecRZeaw 337MB hard drive from 1984. 8-inch platters, does not appear to be ST-412 compat. And wow it looks complex

<andlabs> X68000 update
<andlabs> [17:46:33] <andlabs>the signals coming out of the video port look good on the oscilloscope
<andlabs> [17:46:41] <andlabs>and as for the power light... nothing
<andlabs> [17:46:47] <andlabs>the drive lights are on but not the power light
<andlabs> I'm now tempted to just fully disassemble the computer to see what plugs into where but I'm increasingly uncertain about putting it back together again...
<andlabs> but I might as well to see if the battery has leaked
<andlabs> or not, because I have no idea how it comes apart
<andlabs> it's got screws coming in both directions everywhere I look
<andlabs> why is this model not more well documented argh
<andlabs> wait no I got the bottom, there's an extra screw
<andlabs> ...but there's no battery
<andlabs> is the battery on one of the side boards instead?
<protosphere> i could be wrong but i seem to recall it being on the right-side board (looking from the front)
<andlabs> ok
<andlabs> well there's more than one and the front panel is in the way of some of the screws but sure I can try taking that apart next
<andlabs> the only saving grace of this whole project is that Sharp used all the same screws in the entire system
<andlabs> or seemed to, anyway; my doubts are rising
<andlabs> wait no lol the battery was visible the whole time
<andlabs> good news: it's not leaking
<andlabs> bad news: it's dead
<andlabs> does a dead battery lead to the computer refusing to even flash the power light?
<protosphere> i believe it should still boot at least
<protosphere> https://gamesx.com/wiki/doku.php?id=x68000:sram_issues suggests booting off a disk to reset the SRAM - which makes me assume it'd be bootable in that state
<andlabs> then something else is wrong...
<protosphere> on SASI models you also won't be able to boot off a SCSI device with a dead battery since the SxSI bootloader is stored in SRAM
<andlabs> yeah
<protosphere> you mentioned the video signals looked okay, do you get a picture at all though?
<andlabs> nope
<andlabs> at least not with the monitor that this came with
<andlabs> I can try getting a VGA cable but that'll take a few days
<protosphere> do you have a pc98 or something with the same connector you could test the monitor with?
<andlabs> oh
<andlabs> I have the epson laptop
<andlabs> if that counts
<andlabs> wait no it doesn't; different video connector
