ChanServ changed the topic of ##yamahasynths to: Channel dedicated to questions and discussion of Yamaha FM Synthesizer internals and corresponding REing. Discussion of synthesis methods similar to the Yamaha line of chips, Sound Blasters + clones, PCM chips like RF5C68, and CD theory of operation are also on-topic. <andlabs> lol
<andlabs> we were talking about iomega disk formats yesterday
<andlabs> I just picked up an Amiga 2000 with an internal Bernoulli drive
<andlabs> at least that's the only result for the drive's part number "HF24-DR"

<Foone> ooh, neato! got pics?
<cr1901_modern> https://twitter.com/cr1901/status/1380389110972616709 So I've never played Earthbound, but I know the ending, etc. I think the sound design on the PSI effects are beautiful. Anyone know how it was done?
<cr1901_modern> Sounds like they compressed square/tri/saw/sine waves using BRR directly and it was "perfect" compression
<cr1901_modern> The noise channel sounds very much like Virtual Boy, but that's only my hearing
<fseidel> as someone who has never really been one for the sound of the SNES, Earthbound has absolutely brilliant sound design and use of the SNES hardware
<fseidel> There are a number of simple waveform samples baked into the ROM, see here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FjKGp6wJdv4
<cr1901_modern> Wonder if that square wave deliberately has a small transition during the flat part or if it's an artefact of compression
<fseidel> Hip Tanaka is on twitter, you could ask him: https://twitter.com/tanac2e
<fseidel> no idea if he responds though
<cr1901_modern> Or if he remembers :P
<cr1901_modern> (thanks for the hint)
<fseidel> my suspicion is that it's intentional, I don't think BRR would generate compression artifacts like that
<fseidel> but I'm not a compression expert by any means
<cr1901_modern> Not that I can hear the difference
<cr1901_modern> I heard rumors that maybe those samples were created by directly capturing sound from older consoles. But it seems like So Much Less work just to hand-create them as if they were perfect samples
<cr1901_modern> without "imperfections" like the square wave with a jump
<fseidel> it definitely doesn't sound like a pure square, not sure if that's the SNES filtering being applied afterward, or if it's the visible distortion
<cr1901_modern> ahh, there are some parts of the song you linked where the oscilloscope "phase locks" to the waveform
<cr1901_modern> and there's no frequency or amplitude distortion

<ValleyBell> SN-U110-xx PCM dumping progress: It's working fine so far.
<ValleyBell> I'm dumping each card twice, one dump takes about 7 minutes.
<ValleyBell> SN-U110-01 has a demo song called "Cantata147", which is mostly raw MIDI data.
<ValleyBell> According to https://www.dtech.lv/techarticles_roland_exp.html this is the only card with such a demo song.
<ValleyBell> I haven't found a way to play it on the U-110 though.
