ChanServ changed the topic of ##yamahasynths to: Channel dedicated to questions and discussion of Yamaha FM Synthesizer internals and corresponding REing. Discussion of synthesis methods similar to the Yamaha line of chips, Sound Blasters + clones, PCM chips like RF5C68, and CD theory of operation are also on-topic. <Lord_Nightmare> is gewt on IRC? I have some notes about the TI Language Tutor thing...
<Lord_Nightmare> if you want to emulate a VSM to get speech back into the main unit, you will need a small CPLD to do it. IIRC furrtek had a bunch of these programmed and made (and honestly I could use a few myself)
<Lord_Nightmare> as for encoding the speech itself, https://github.com/patrick99e99/BlueWizard works reasonably well but editing the speech frames manualy is a bit wonky, and it is mac only. if you want to go full traditional, use qboxpro on a windows 3.1 machine.

<Lord_Nightmare> also if you use bluewizard keep in mind it was intended for encoding speech for a tms5220, so you will need to make some changes to encode speech for a tmc0280/cd2801 as used on the ti language translator since the pitch field is 5 bits wide instead of 6
<Lord_Nightmare> gewt:

<cr1901_modern> It's amazing... all you have to do is ask if someone's on IRC, and they appear :o
<gewt> oooh
<cr1901_modern> furrtek also used to be in here, but after his Patreon work got busy he parted from most channels to concentrate on his work, and never rejoined
<Lord_Nightmare> qboxpro is hard coded to do 6 bits of pitch though, and only includes the tms5220 table. if you want the tms5200/cd2501e table for use with qboxpro, i have a copy here
<Lord_Nightmare> so if you use qboxpro you will need to take the resulting encoded speech data, decode it into frames, and throw out one of the pitch bits, then re-pack it into bytes
<Lord_Nightmare> the cd2801/tmc0280 uses the same lpc tables (but not pitch/energy?) as the tms5200
<Lord_Nightmare> https://github.com/mamedev/mame/blob/master/src/devices/sound/tms5110r.hxx has a f***load of info about the variout ti lpc tables and versions used in different chips
<Lord_Nightmare> there's like 9 combinations
<Lord_Nightmare> also you may want to talk to kevtris about this as well. kevtris is SUPPOSED to be in here too, but I think he left a while back due to too many irc channels on one network :(
<Lord_Nightmare> and if you want copies of *ALL* of the VSM roms kevtris, plgdavid and I have collected over the past 10 years, let me know. afaik we have every single one of the language translator and tutor versions dumped.
<Lord_Nightmare> and dumps of the microcontroller that's inside the units as well
<gewt> i would like those ROMs
<gewt> does a japanese module actually exist?
<Foone> oh hi gewt
<gewt> hello
<Lord_Nightmare> hold on a sec, i need to find them again, they were once on my dropbox, hang on
<Lord_Nightmare> although i haven't kept it up to date :( CD2319 vsm from the Uber-rare spanish speak and spell, which was only test-marketed in ?texas? and then cancelled, was an ESD'd/DOA chip, we had to decap it to dump it
<Lord_Nightmare> the first time that speak and spell worked in 30 years was in an emulator
<gewt> huh
<gewt> neat
<Lord_Nightmare> we are still missing a few VSMs, like the ones from the german "buddy"
<Lord_Nightmare> and the one from Language Teacher: Spoken German, CD3509
<Lord_Nightmare> that's the non-speech version of the language tutor
<gewt> yeah i'm just collecting every language tutor/translator that comes up on ebay. :P
<gewt> so far i've got english, german, french, and spanish modules
<gewt> all 3 of the units i have need some basic repairs
<gewt> one has a faulty power circuit that has bad solder joints
<gewt> all the rest need the volume put cleaned and some other basic maintenance
<andlabs> ah you finally joined here
<andlabs> =P
<gewt> yes :D

<Foone> andlabs: now that Frys has closed, all those rip-offs gotta go somewhere
<Foone> andlabs: have you seen the people selling you DOSBox? they don't even bother burning it to a CD and mailing it to you. they just send you a download code
<andlabs> =P
<andlabs> oh that's about the ebay list
<andlabs> not about the intentionally overblown tweet I just made

<Foone> andlabs: ahh, yeah. I didn't know you'd left in the meantime, I have my IRC set up to not show the user list and also to not show parts/joins. it usually works really well given that we're in the age of forever-on IRC boxes but occasionally it results in me trying to talk to people who aren't here anymore
<andlabs> my laptop has been acting up awfully lately
<andlabs> in fact I now have to do a proper reboot because the audio system crashed
<andlabs> anyway I was about to say sometimes I just want to fight =P
<Foone> oh yeah. I did something similar when I yelled at amiga for their DD disks
<Foone> I don't know why amigaists are so... like that
<andlabs> troll move by the USB people
<andlabs> support the weird 78 sector/cylinder format used by PC-98 but not Amiga GCR
<Foone> I guess they backed an expensive-but-powerful computer back in the early 80s and then it completely lost the microcomputer wars and they're still bitter
<Foone> *mid-80s
<andlabs> indeed
<andlabs> honestly I'm just annoyed by things that are common yet overpriced
<andlabs> but then again I wind up paying bargains for rare shit so
<andlabs> IDK
<andlabs> brb rebooting

<andlabs> yes please hibernate immediatley after powering on, that's very useful
<Foone> amiga at least has a thriving and apparently successful-in-business market for modern hardware. I guess it's a real benefit of having a mostly-static hardware design that they've been improving on for three decades. vs PC where there's a lot less fan-made hardware because it's such a moving target.
<andlabs> I guess?
<andlabs> amigaone complicates that but
<andlabs> also check queries
<andlabs> but yeah that linux auction is lol
<andlabs> I wonder if the design language of that first image has a name
<andlabs> I guess
<cr1901_modern> Well, I may have gotten myself a broken 286 system. Gonna make an attempt to fix it before using it for parts
<cr1901_modern> And it's a Hyundai... always wanted a Hyundai computer system b/c it sounds hilarious that the ship and car maker also made motherboards
<Foone> oh neat
<Foone> neat. but also, sorry you have one of the leading-zero zip codes
<cr1901_modern> Oh? Zip codes aren't prefix codes?
<Foone> which reminds me I need to go by my New Storage Unit soon, the one which had that warning on their website not to use gate-access codes over 2^31...
<cr1901_modern> I hope SCSI The Bitey Cat is doing well
<Foone> last I heard, yep. She sadly doesn't live with me anymore.
<cr1901_modern> Yea I saw the thread. I love SCSI. She has beautiful markings (for a cat that's not a brown tabby)
