ChanServ changed the topic of ##yamahasynths to: Channel dedicated to questions and discussion of Yamaha FM Synthesizer internals and corresponding REing. Discussion of synthesis methods similar to the Yamaha line of chips, Sound Blasters + clones, PCM chips like RF5C68, and CD theory of operation are also on-topic. Channel logs: https://freenode.irclog.whitequark.org/~h~yamahasynths
<andlabs> oh
<andlabs> I misread
<andlabs> sorry =P
<andlabs> though I need to write bookkeeping stuff too
<andlabs> like "sitll need to dump the individual eeproms"
<andlabs> eh
<andlabs> I'll probably just get some post-it ntoes
<Lord_Nightmare> i got an fb-01 a few days ago, for a price i couldn't turn down. i still need to set it up though...

<andlabs> yes
<andlabs> do it
<andlabs> tiny fm box
<andlabs> shoudl hav ebeen used in game sbut I guess they weren't as forward thinking as roland
<andlabs> despite making a literal luggable PC with tons of MIDI ports
<Lord_Nightmare> yeah fb-01 should have competed with mt-32
<Lord_Nightmare> fb-01 however got kinda a bit murdered by the presence of the adlib
<Lord_Nightmare> since fb-01 is a ym2164, 8 channels of 4 op fm
<Lord_Nightmare> while opl2 is 9 channels of 2 op (or 6 channels plus drums)
<Lord_Nightmare> ym2164 == ym2151 with some added DRM crap which can be safely ignored in most cases
<Lord_Nightmare> the yamaha tx-81z though is basically an fb-01 on steroids
<Lord_Nightmare> i want one of those too
<Lord_Nightmare> ym2414, 8 channel 4 op fm, but with the same(?) 8 waveforms that the opl3 has instead of the usual 1 waveform of the ym2151/2164
<Lord_Nightmare> you can do a lot of pseudo-6-op-fm stuff with it
<andlabs> again, not really DRM, just some extra features used by the DX-21 and DX-100 that I still don't know what it is yet
<andlabs> I need ot og back to analyzing the firmware
<andlabs> heh
<andlabs> I should probably also get one
<andlabs> one thing to note with FB-01 is that you're really forced to use i tthrough MIDI; you can't easily just deal with the chip directly

<andlabs> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mbUFfAk9SYo see when people do things absurd like this they're good, just limit yousrelf to simple silly stuff and maybe I'll not feel so jaded I guess =P

<Foone> Lord_Nightmare: DRM crap? how do you put DRM in a sound chip?
<Foone> unless you pay for a license, you cannot play THE FORBIDDEN NOTES
<andlabs> there are extra undocumented registers
<andlabs> those registers are not used by the SFG-05 / FB-01 but if you don't set them the system won't work right
<andlabs> set them to 0
<andlabs> and the test register used for LFO reset is in a different place
<andlabs> the DX-100 does actually use those extra registers though
<andlabs> setting them to values between 0 and $F based on something
<andlabs> I **think** it's the mod wheel
<andlabs> but I don't know what the specific ofngiruation is; my attempt at writing a dx100 simulator isn't that elaborate yet
<andlabs> I could probably try writing a basic MAME driver instead
<andlabs> the lack of understanding of these registers causes people to just assume it's some sort of DRM though
<andlabs> it IS nefarious "seerkit hacking toolz" type holding-back of users of FM but whatever
<andlabs> yamaha were dumb
<andlabs> lol you get OPN because we want to keep OPM to ourselves
<andlabs> yes I know you're trying to make a home console that's arcade quality but *raspberry*
<andlabs> or at least htat's allegedly what happened
<andlabs> I don't believe it for one reason: the X68000
<andlabs> the excuse is that Sharp were the chip fab but

<andlabs> is there such a thing as a multimeter probe with a tip that's a tube that I can put over a pin instead of holding a pointed tip on the pin clumsily
<andlabs> actually I'll tweet that question
