ChanServ changed the topic of ##yamahasynths to: Channel dedicated to questions and discussion of Yamaha FM Synthesizer internals and corresponding REing. Discussion of synthesis methods similar to the Yamaha line of chips, Sound Blasters + clones, PCM chips like RF5C68, and CD theory of operation are also on-topic. Channel logs: https://freenode.irclog.whitequark.org/~h~yamahasynths

I keep checking that one for support of disc based copy protection so I can backup my early 2000s CD titles and feel safe
<Stilett0>
In a way, I feel like a lot more eyes are on that project than on Sarami's, especially due to its expansion of scope. However, it's gonna take much longer to get to the finish line, due to that expansion of scope.
<Zorix>
oh discimagecreator, that one does safedisc and securom, the ones predominantly in my collection
<andlabs>
ok
<andlabs>
just gotta get the compatible drives
<andlabs>
and also wonder if IDE or SATA -> USB cables are compatible or if I'm gonna have to set up a PC

<andlabs>
is this something that manfuacturers did back in the MFM and early IDE days
<andlabs>
just
<andlabs>
list out the bad sectors that they knew about from the factory
<andlabs>
I can't imagine that instilling confidence, no?
<andlabs>
especially given how by this point they must have been selling drive sto people who didn't know or care about fdisking out bad sectors
<andlabs>
that looks too formal to be something made by the owner too
<andlabs>
<Foone>
yeah. that was common in the MFM era
<Foone>
I think basically what happened is that with the IDE era, the controller is on the board and knows what those bad sectors are, and can silently map around them
<Foone>
so they don't need to tell you what they are
<Foone>
and you don't low-level format drives anymore. you can't, in fact
<andlabs>
s/fdisk/the BIOS/
<Foone>
but in the ST506/MFM era you had to to change interleave, so you had to be able to re-enter the bad sectors
<andlabs>
and heh, all right
<andlabs>
it just seems like a bit much for Joe Nobody
<andlabs>
especially for something prepackaged like this
<andlabs>
maybe they set it up at the assembly plant
<Foone>
the drives would come pre-formatted (at least low-level formatted), so you didn't have to low level format unless you changed controllers or wanted to optimize your interleave
<Foone>
so joe nobody wouldn't need to deal with it
<andlabs>
indeed
<andlabs>
and now hard disk just are streams of bytes so
<andlabs>
which is how things always should have been but whatever
<Foone>
<AlanShugart> I TOLD YOU
<andlabs>
oh he thought tha tway too? well then I would love to go back in time and make shugart have made floppy disk copy protection impossible
<Foone>
he was partially responsible for SASI which became SCSI, and uses that stream-of-blocks style of handling drives
<andlabs>
yes
<andlabs>
I mean way back to the first shugart drives =P
<andlabs>
oh that reminds me Foone did you see my response to your question about the weird disk drive
<andlabs>
I do have the machine now
<Foone>
no, I don't think so, I must have missed it
<Foone>
I've been crazy busy with moving
<andlabs>
still moving? how much is left?
<Sarayan>
Hi Captain Bible!
<Sarayan>
There seems to be a lot more game that tends to be usual for that kind of game
<andlabs>
am I unknowingly making a reference?
<Sarayan>
andlabs: Foone has been playing a metroidvania bible game lately
<andlabs>
oh
<andlabs>
...
<Foone>
andlabs: I'm basically done now. I just need to rent a local storage unit and move the uhaul out of my driveway
<andlabs>
so I can either get an accelerator to be able to run linux on it or get a SCSI PCI card to connect it to one of my other computers
<andlabs>
(linux requires an MMU which means 68030 or newer)
<andlabs>
(or a separate MMU which I don't think were made as standalone zorro cards?)
<Foone>
SCSI PCI cards are pretty common thankfully
<Foone>
if you don't have one I'm sure I can easily dig one up
<andlabs>
heh
<andlabs>
you missed my big long twitter thread where I overthink which kind of card to get to hell and high water
<andlabs>
and which ncommander strangely says I was fully justified in doing so?
<Foone>
yeah, I missed that
<andlabs>
but yeah I'm pretty sure I don't have one, nor do I know which one would be best =P I am open to suggestions
<Foone>
I don't really have an opinion of which one is best. They're all pretty similar in my experience. But I've got plenty and I'd be happy to mail you one
<andlabs>
uhh sure; thanks, I suppose =P
<Sarayan>
it's annoying, I can't download firmware updates for the liteon es1 dvd writer without knowing the exact model/vendor the firmware says it is
<Sarayan>
but how can I know if I want to buy one without identifying the processor thanks to a firmware update, heh?
<Sarayan>
they should think about perfectly normal people who want to know what's the integrated mcu in their usb dvd write before buying it
<andlabs>
I don't even understand the question lol
<cr1901_modern>
>you had to to change interleave, so you had to be able to re-enter the bad sectors
<cr1901_modern>
FWIW, if a track had a single bad sector, the entire track went unused

that stuff has gotten expensive, I remember getting a bunch of ram carts for my vic20 for real cheap.. I have one of those cart expanders and one of those memory carts I can select the banks, which is fun because I can load a cartridge rom from disk into the correct area then reset and play the game
<cr1901_modern>
Everything retro has gotten expensive. Though I don't ever remember it exactly being cheap either, even 10+ years ago.
