ChanServ changed the topic of ##yamahasynths to: Channel dedicated to questions and discussion of Yamaha FM Synthesizer internals and corresponding REing. Discussion of synthesis methods similar to the Yamaha line of chips, Sound Blasters + clones, PCM chips like RF5C68, and CD theory of operation are also on-topic. <andlabs> I'm going to give up on these two pentium 3 boards
<andlabs> I took the dimension 2400 upstairs to evaluate it and wow uhh this is even less well endowed than I remember
<andlabs> 3 PCI slots, *NO* AGP slots (there's solder pads but no slot) despit ethe back of the case having a removable blank in that slot, no ISA slots
<andlabs> it does have a 2.something ghz pentium 4 (and of course bieng a Pentium 4 machine it has a comically large green plastic heatsink on the CPU) and two memory slots that can accept up to 2GB of RAM despite not being documented as taking more than 512MB sticks (you figure that out)
<andlabs> onboard video and ethernet though and actual on-board LED diagnostics so I guess I can just apply the extra PCI cards I need and not worry about graphics cards or that POST card
<andlabs> amazingly it avoided getting super dusty inside after 20 years (10 of which saw very little use in a dusty part of my desk) so that's good

<ValleyBell> balrog: According to the Roland Museum page, the TN-SC cards are for E-35/36/56/70 keyboards, the RA-90 module or the pianos KR-650/3500/4500/5500

<ValleyBell> I don't have any of those, actually. I just wanted to know what other sorts of cards I am able to dump.
<andlabs> it's post-SC-55 so eh
<andlabs> the gimmick with that is that those cards have auto accompaniment

<balrog> Foone: accordions are fun. Hopefully the one you got has a good bellows
<cr1901_modern> bellows in and of themselves are interesting IMO- for example, their use in pipe organs (only ones that don't use electricity?)

<andlabs> https://www.ebay.com/itm/224460325457 I like this first picture it makes the color-screen thinkpad look like it has a gas plasma display
<andlabs> (in b4 that's actually a defect)

<balrog> A friend has a whole bunch of electronic accordion-organs
<cr1901_modern> W-what is an accordian organ?
<balrog> trying to find useful references, but there's electronics in the accordion in addition to the reeds that control a tone generator box that has components similar to electronic organs of the era
<Foone> balrog: this one isn't very good. it was already very leaky, I think when the reeds broke off they smashed the inside of the bellows so it has a bunch of small holes in it now
<balrog> oof
<Foone> you can get these for like 7$ on alibaba so it clearly wasn't ever designed to be Quality
<balrog> hmm reeds broke off... wonder if it was stored in a hot attic or such
<balrog> causing the wax to fail
<balrog> that's just plain tho
<balrog> hm I think the specific one I'm thinking of had the organ/synth hardware in the accordion and the external part was just an expression pedal / power supply
<Foone> based on how it failed I think someone may have fallen on it, causing it to try to compress too much, which snapped some plastic holding the reeds in place
<cr1901_modern> Just plain as in "restorer removed the electronics"?
<balrog> cr1901_modern: no, plain as in "never had any electronics"
<balrog> because these companies made them both with and without electronics
<cr1901_modern> ahhh
<balrog> Foone: when looking at accordions, bellows quality is probably the #1 problem
<balrog> most of the other stuff can be fixed with not too much effort
<balrog> that said I'd be more curious what random stuff people have around you; this cheap alibaba stuff isn't usually worth looking at even
<Foone> to be honest I'm not looking for a good accordion, because I'm planning to mod it in ways that'll make it not a musical instrument anymore, so I don't want to ruin a good one
<balrog> :P
<balrog> if you need broken ones they're usually not hard to come by either :P :P
<Foone> I've joked before I'd love to have like a "shitbay" site, where it's people selling ONLY BROKEN electronics
<balrog> why do you see lots of broken accordions? bellows are hard to fix (near-impossible) and expensive to replace that it's not worth repairing them; the other stuff is annoying to replace and often makes it not worthwhile
<balrog> there was an interesting post some time ago on the analogue-heaven mailing list about plastic degradation and that's something that worries me
* cr1901_modern has never touched an accordian, but Weird Al's Classical Gas rendition is Very Good
