ChanServ changed the topic of ##yamahasynths to: Channel dedicated to questions and discussion of Yamaha FM Synthesizer internals and corresponding REing. Discussion of synthesis methods similar to the Yamaha line of chips, Sound Blasters + clones, PCM chips like RF5C68, and CD theory of operation are also on-topic. and I think my 1Ghz celeron is either broken or incompatible with the monitor
<andlabs|2>
fortunately I have a slot 1 CPU I can use instead... but it's missing whatever it uses to stay in place, so the connection is very loose and it doesn't get far into a linux boot before it locks up

Foone: oh irght I should have mentioned - Yamaha also made 5.25" MSX drives, and possibly some others
<andlabs|2>
of course Sony is probably to blame for it not being very common
<andlabs|2>
=P
<andlabs|2>
MSX-DOS actually doesn't really care too much about the exact medium; it's why things like the Quick Disk drives and Nextor exist
<andlabs|2>
(yes that's the same Quick Disk that was used for the FDS, apparently)

I decided ot look at that slot 1 card and it's just a socket 370 CPU on a card so I'll probably just transplant that onto the board instead - will actually do so tomorrow

<Foone>
those are fun. slotkets!
<Foone>
I had to get one of those when I built a computer RIGHT AT THE TIME when the online parts site I was using had just started selling socket 370 celerons but was still selling slot1 motherboards
<Foone>
and I didn't realize that fact until the parts arrived and I was like WAIT A MINUTE HERE
<andlabs>
I still wonder what the first notebook form factor computer was
<andlabs>
the tandy 200?
<Foone>
I thought I remembered reading it was the IBM Convertable but it's a kind of proto-laptop. it's like a luggable with a battery
<Sarayan>
it's supposed to be the osborne 1
<Sarayan>
1981
<Foone>
that doesn't have a battery, though, so it's not really a notebook
<Sarayan>
epson hx-20 then?
<Sarayan>
Dulmont Magnum/Kookaburra otherwise (ain't that a cool name?)
<Sarayan>
anyway, good night all of you
<Foone>
amusingly I just got a craigslist email where someone is selling an HP 110, as "the first laptop computer"
<Foone>
and that wikipedia page points to the Grid Compass, which launched in april '82, making it a very early laptop-like
<gewt>
yeah language tutors/translators have gone up in price now
<gewt>
there is now 1 on ebay for like $300
<gewt>
plenty of modules for the ti-99/4a tho
<andlabs>
see you're falling into the trap I'm trying to avoid
<andlabs>
I specifically am asking about laptop form factors
<andlabs>
notebook form factor laptops
<gewt>
netbook time
<andlabs>
the early epsons and tandy 100s and other portables that I still don't understand how anyone tolerated because you have to tilt your head down 90 degrees to use them aren't that
<andlabs>
and neither are the osbornes lol
<andlabs>
Grid Compass might actually answer my question though
