ChanServ changed the topic of ##yamahasynths to: Channel dedicated to questions and discussion of Yamaha FM Synthesizer internals and corresponding REing. Discussion of synthesis methods similar to the Yamaha line of chips, Sound Blasters + clones, PCM chips like RF5C68, and CD theory of operation are also on-topic. <andlabs> I switched to SD card and it still fails to boot
<andlabs> now I'm running memtest86 and it's starting to ttell me even my new RAM is failing
<andlabs> and I'm not sure if something actually did happen or not
<andlabs> and now it locked up
<balrog> Foone: As a matter of fact I have a few PCMCIA memory cards here
<balrog> one is an AMD AmC008DFLKA and Linux recognizes it as a 4MB card :(
<andlabs> well I made progress
<andlabs> switched back to the slot 1
<andlabs> and memtest86 passed again
<andlabs> ...until the CPU got loose and started failing blockc opies
<andlabs> tried it agan with all RAM and I managed to ge tthe OS to boot !!!
<andlabs> and then shut it down before something bad
<andlabs> so... yeah, either the socket is broken or the CPU is, probably the socket; maybe I didn't install it right either, who knows
<andlabs> I'll need to get either a new slot 1 CPU or a bracket for properly mounting this slotket since I see others having some plastic cartridge-y bits
<andlabs> this is a motherboard that has both socket 370 and slot 1 on board
<andlabs> I don't know what those are called and searching for the obvious phrases like mounting bracket doesn't give me anything relevant
<andlabs> also the slotket does confirm that the motherboar dindeed does not support the 1Ghz chip :|
<andlabs> (unless it's damaged, but who knows)
<andlabs> ...holy moly
<andlabs> ebay sellers are practically giving slot 1 pentiums away lol
<andlabs> sure I'll get one for $10 just to see if that's better
<andlabs> though some of the faster ones are also slightly more expensive, but only slightly, and I might get that one because they also say it's tested
<andlabs> picked up a Pentium III 733 MHz 256KB L2 133Mhz FSB; this should be fun

<andlabs> oh no he said 110 volt
<andlabs> nowadays that would mean getting bombarded with smug european commenters :D
<Nerionaya> here in my country we have twenty billion volts coming out of the wall socket and it's fine because our plugs aren't just a fork you shove in the power outlet like in america
<andlabs> change that to 'back in old country," and slap an eastern european accent on it and you've got a 90s kids tv show joke
<fseidel> in old country, phase alternate you!
