ChanServ changed the topic of ##yamahasynths to: Channel dedicated to questions and discussion of Yamaha FM Synthesizer internals and corresponding REing. Discussion of synthesis methods similar to the Yamaha line of chips, Sound Blasters + clones, PCM chips like RF5C68, and CD theory of operation are also on-topic. Channel logs: https://freenode.irclog.whitequark.org/~h~yamahasynths

oh of course it inflated at the very end :/ ebayers are smart
<andlabs>
I did not get it, it went for $275
<ej5>
yeah that's a legit old school rev A ad lib. those go for $$$
<ej5>
rev B are more common and a lot cheaper

<fseidel>
Is there a canonical way to mute a YM2151 channel?
<andlabs>
I think "set both the TL and D1L/RR to 0 and turn off all four operators"
<andlabs>
*TL to 127 because attenuation
<cr1901_modern>
0 is max volume
<andlabs>
setting RR to 0 is important because switching off an operator that's still in the attack or either decay phases will send it to release instead
<andlabs>
i forget why setting TL to 127 is important in this case
<andlabs>
it probably has to do with th esame release behavior
<fseidel>
right now I just set TL of every operator to 7F and it seems to work, but I didn't know if there was something better
<fseidel>
sounds like I need RR too, thanks.

eh, good enough for me
<fseidel>
Q2: why does the octave start at C# and end at C, instead of starting at C?
<fseidel>
is this a music theory thing, or a weird Yamaha-ism?
<cr1901_modern>
Probably a Yamaha-ism. The datasheets aren't exactly known to be flawless

<Lord_Nightmare>
andlabs: digital character generators for TV often have rare keyswitches in them
<Lord_Nightmare>
there was one here foone discussed a while back, which someone i know ended up getting off ebay to harvest the keyswitches from it
<Lord_Nightmare>
the roms etc did end up being dumped too, I think, but it needs further work, its z180 based?

<andlabs>
ok
<andlabs>
well I'm not harvesting keyswitches
<andlabs>
so you'll be able to do all the work to this one :)
<andlabs>
I'll also need ot be more suspicious of random ebay listings I guess, if machine preservation is at stake
<andlabs>
and to think i was angry at goodwill recycling practices lol
<andlabs>
again, we have 3D printers
<andlabs>
no excuses

<cr1901_modern>
Are you willing to do photos of the inside? I'm curious
<andlabs>
yes =P it'll be necessary to get it working anyway because the power cord was cut
