Allright, I'm stumped. Got my cubieboard2 on friday, and for the life of me I can't figure out how to reflash this damned thing
<Kamilion>
all i get is a red light or no red light
<Kamilion>
OK, will see if that quirk applys to VMWare Workstation 9.0.2
<shineworld>
I'm a windows programmer by 15 years ... it put food on my tables
<Kamilion>
on Windows 7 64bit
<Kamilion>
yeah, and I wouldn't trust a windows box to host any server thing
<shineworld>
to get the right PID you have to put the board on FEL mode (in linux) and get the value from: lsusb -v
<Kamilion>
but linux is still terrible and fragmented on the desktop -- I *must* use ubuntu or centos or packages are impossible to find, and then why do not I just run arch and gcc EVERYTHING for days ;)
<Kamilion>
Nvidia CUDA SDK does not play well with Arch
<Kamilion>
no Gentoo support
<Kamilion>
debian is too old
<Kamilion>
redhat is pile of 2.6.18 crap
<Kamilion>
so is centos
<Kamilion>
fedora is bad for servers because fedora says so
<Kamilion>
so all that is left is ubuntu... and oracle doesn't support ubuntu!
<Kamilion>
But such is the life of an engineer, eh?
<shineworld>
actually I'm using xubuntu 12.04 x64 and all worked fine
<Kamilion>
hm, i'll be using lubuntu 13.04 64bit
<shineworld>
12.04.1 and > have some problems (listen by friends)
<shineworld>
probably not problems with LiveSuit but with other things like Android eco-system
<Kamilion>
buildroot / compile problems, maybe?
<shineworld>
missing required packets etc..
<shineworld>
gcc to downgrade
<shineworld>
and son on
<shineworld>
so
<shineworld>
I've tried many times to get Android OS for A10 on 12.10 without results so I've moved back to 12.04
<shineworld>
and I've care to avoid any new system update :)
<Kamilion>
the vm?? not your host pc i pray

old chromium hurts to use, hahahahahaha
<Kamilion>
anyway, i have some engineering questions for my cubieboard2 purpouse
<Kamilion>
i wish to connect to many SATA drive to diagnose problems -- SoC with SATA i think can be ideal
<shineworld>
I'm using a powerful PC which run MacOSX like host and with a lot of VM for my dev jobs
<shineworld>
Cubie can connect only one SATA disk I guess....
<Kamilion>
how 'deep' may i speak with the SATA drive from the cubieboard?
<Kamilion>
may i send my own commands to the disk and see my results?
<shineworld>
sorry I'm an Android based peripheral dummy maker which don't use SATA interface ...
<Kamilion>
i think it is not AHCI like PC
<Kamilion>
and i can get away from PC AHCI drivers and bios and RAID controller
<Kamilion>
and send ATA SECURE ERASE command
<Kamilion>
A20 is very inexpensive, i hope it will be very good for this use
<FR^2>
grrr, that damned dns issue with chroot.

I've ten prototypes CB10 Android based running 24H/24H by some customer and now I've moved to A20 but this time I will use linux ... so I'm learning ...
<Kamilion>
any problems learned from 24H? any components to worry about heat?
<jelly-home>
how fast do you need it to be? My potential customers can still live with 30-60 second boot time

<utente>
FR^2, partially. but there is a problem with temperature: i mean that A210 is more hot than A10. if you love to play with oveclocking, be aware of that.
<FR^2>
Not yet, not until I've found a way to monitor temperatures etc.

at moment I'm using without but when I will close board in a box I need to take in count also ambient temperature so I guess a little fan could be used

utente: you think? I had no issues compiling a big kernel on mine (didn't attempt to monitor or check temperature though) ... it is just sitting out though, not enclosed
<FR^2>
Okay, good to know.
<FR^2>
argh, I still got no swap-enabled kernel running: swapon /mnt/sda/swap.img --> swapon: /mnt/sda/swap.img: swapon failed: Function not implemented

It won't.

how can you be so sure?

i asked the other relevant channel also, waiting for answers..any news about any working bsd on the cubie?
<Gumboot>
utente: Because the CPU doesn't draw enough power to warm itself up substantially. If it can't warm itself up then dissipating that heat isn't going to make much difference.
<Gumboot>
You could try active cooling to push it well below ambient. That _might_ push you into a position where you get some extra performance, but it can equally make it worse.
<utente>
Gumboot, what maximum Mhz did you set on CB?
<Gumboot>
I think it's around 1200 or so. I haven't pushed very hard, myself.
<utente>
yes, me too i stay between 1152 and 1200. if i set more, soc starts to be hot. so, with heat dissipator, i hope to reach 1300, just that.
