<lawrence88>
plug in a serial cable and see what the cpu is telling you is wrong
<setkeh>
oh man i dont have a serial cable :( i only got the cubie today XD
<lawrence88>
you can download a known working image
<lawrence88>
or even boot to android and download berryboot and use that
<setkeh>
hmm yeah
<setkeh>
could i do serial via the USB B ??
<lawrence88>
you need to connect to the UART to see what the cpu says during boot so you can see whats happening. eg the uboot output, and if it gets further the kernel output.
<lawrence88>
if you have a USB to TTL adaptor you can use that
<setkeh>
oh yeah but i can get the one i linked on mon or Tues if i get the one from China ill have to wait like a month XD
<\\Mr_C\\>
ok
<lawrence88>
don't forget, don't connect 5v to the cubie on the ttl adaptor
<lawrence88>
as it doesn't need it
<lawrence88>
it already has 5v going out.
<lawrence88>
just need tx,rx, and gnd
jschneider has joined #cubieboard
delusr_ has joined #cubieboard
<setkeh>
yep i saw that on the wiki :D
<\\Mr_C\\>
that +5 is good for the serial ones that dont supply its own power
<lawrence88>
also, if you're using USB serial adaptors, try to get FTDI based chipsets.
<\\Mr_C\\>
i have quite a few
<lawrence88>
as CHxx ones are garbage
<\\Mr_C\\>
different types
<lawrence88>
PL2302 is also crap
<\\Mr_C\\>
yea
<\\Mr_C\\>
i have some hdx's
<lawrence88>
i use a max232 but i haz serial portz
<\\Mr_C\\>
same
<lawrence88>
usb is teh evi1l
<lawrence88>
;)
<\\Mr_C\\>
i like the fact i have 1 pc with a true serial port
<lawrence88>
i have several laptops with serial
<lawrence88>
X60, X61, T62p, T61 etc
<lawrence88>
ibm
<\\Mr_C\\>
cool
<\\Mr_C\\>
hmm
<\\Mr_C\\>
i should break out the old laptops i got
<\\Mr_C\\>
just to use the serial ports
smccarthy has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<lawrence88>
thats pretty much what my X series are for - dedicated terminal devices
<\\Mr_C\\>
what os you use?
<lawrence88>
it depends on what i'm doing
<\\Mr_C\\>
i got two old laptops that barely run dos
<lawrence88>
mostly osx though
<lawrence88>
then debian
<lawrence88>
then windows for some stuff, as some tools are only on windows
<lawrence88>
these days you can do most things in a vm though, so i have less boxes running.
<lawrence88>
than before
<setkeh>
cubie already has android flashed ??
<lawrence88>
most of the ones i've seen have android on the nand
<setkeh>
ooh take SD out and i get a green light :D
<setkeh>
yep i have android splash
<lawrence88>
out of 5 i had 1 with just the bootloader, the rest had android
<lawrence88>
i should check the a20's i have and see, haven't even touched those yet..
<\\Mr_C\\>
screw that delete the nand
<\\Mr_C\\>
put linux with just console
<setkeh>
yeah i will but i gotta get it to boot first ^_^
<lawrence88>
there are images on my forum if you need
<\\Mr_C\\>
you got a working laptop or desktop with linux?
<setkeh>
im Dlding the the ubuntu one of cubieboard.org atm
<setkeh>
\\Mr_C\\: yeah i dont use windows at all
<lawrence88>
maybe grab one off cubieforums.com
<lawrence88>
we have a couple on there.
<\\Mr_C\\>
you can use a script to build your own empty clean debian with a script
<\\Mr_C\\>
onto an sdcard or make an image
<setkeh>
i would like to use ALARM so it hooks straing into my DistCC stuff and has all the same scripts as my poweredge 1950's and workstation and the like :D
<setkeh>
so to boot from nand do i need to do anything special or its bassicly the same as the uSD
<\\Mr_C\\>
i dont like them pre-build images thats provided, i like my stuff clean and empty then i can install apt-get what i want
<setkeh>
yeah im the same :D i just wanna boot it so im not fussed atm :D
<lawrence88>
to boot off nand, need to wipe the android partitions, and repartition
<setkeh>
yep
<lawrence88>
and stick a uboot that knows about stuff on the nand
<lawrence88>
probably some newer uboot nand available by now, but i've been busy on other stuff for the last month or four
<\\Mr_C\\>
i think they come with a script to write to nand after you boot the cubie
<setkeh>
also i noticed the cubie has 2x 3.5mm jacks it support mic also ??
<lawrence88>
yes, mic in
<setkeh>
badass
<setkeh>
(Srry im new to embedded stuff ^_^)
<setkeh>
ive only used Rpi and its not fantastic
<\\Mr_C\\>
hehe
<\\Mr_C\\>
they both have advantages and disadvantages
<setkeh>
my Rpi is possesed lol it keeps corrupting its SDcard
<\\Mr_C\\>
hmm
<setkeh>
now i got the cubie im going to backup the HDD (3.5 lappy hdd) im using for the rpi and stick that on the cubie then ill give the rpi a NFS root
<setkeh>
rpi is old its a rev1 model B
<\\Mr_C\\>
i like the rpi because of the camera module
<\\Mr_C\\>
and the motion sensor
<setkeh>
i havent done much with the GPIO or shields with the Rpi i use my arduino for that XD
<\\Mr_C\\>
i only bid and won because some jerk was screwing with me
<\\Mr_C\\>
what wuold you use that for if you had it?
<setkeh>
couldent see wy i wouldent has some cool stuff in it :P
<\\Mr_C\\>
hehe
<\\Mr_C\\>
i dont know or have a lsue what to do with it
<\\Mr_C\\>
i dont know or have a clue what to do with it
<\\Mr_C\\>
is that 100% compatible with the true arduino boards?
<setkeh>
Well it has some neat stuff and im sure there are things you can do with what is provided though if you wanted to do somthing practacle you would probably need more part though on th + side electical componants are cheep :D
<setkeh>
\\Mr_C\\: i can say for certain but it looks very simaler to the Arduino Uno though ill ask a buddy real fast :D
<setkeh>
yep its based on the Arduino with some minor tweaks
<setkeh>
so it is compatable from what i can see and my buddy is pretty sure it is too
<\\Mr_C\\>
cool
<\\Mr_C\\>
i thought it was a real one when i ordered it
<\\Mr_C\\>
as im a kn00bie
<setkeh>
yeah it looks nice :D
eebrah|away is now known as eebrah
<setkeh>
i have made a script that runs a bunch of YT vids in VLC for Duino by Jerremy Blum the dude is good https://gist.github.com/6036894
<\\Mr_C\\>
whats a duino?
<\\Mr_C\\>
same thing i got?
<setkeh>
Arduino :D
<\\Mr_C\\>
oh
<setkeh>
i got that habbit from my buddy :/ he calls it a duino XD
<\\Mr_C\\>
this thing can run videos?
<setkeh>
\\Mr_C\\: yep if you have vlc installed just run that script and it will setup a playlist of all his tutorials in that series and win :D
<\\Mr_C\\>
hmm
<\\Mr_C\\>
what?
<\\Mr_C\\>
it can take an OS?
<setkeh>
oh not the arduino
<setkeh>
just run it on your PC :P
<\\Mr_C\\>
im not following you
<setkeh>
\\Mr_C\\: That Script Contains all the Links for Jeremy Blum's Arduino Series for begginers and it will make a VLC playlist using the commandline curses interface and start playing them for you :D
<\\Mr_C\\>
hmm, like a stream or something?
<setkeh>
so you can watch them in VLC without having to bang around Youtube
<setkeh>
yeah
<\\Mr_C\\>
hooking a video screen to it?
<setkeh>
lol nah just on your PC he teaches you how to use your arduino
<setkeh>
and doing your first simple projects
<setkeh>
for the arduino
<setkeh>
you dont run that script on the arduino
<\\Mr_C\\>
oh
<setkeh>
just run it from your current shell :D
<\\Mr_C\\>
laptop
<setkeh>
yeah
<\\Mr_C\\>
so i dont need this sainsmart arduino clone
<\\Mr_C\\>
hehe
<setkeh>
not for that script no
<\\Mr_C\\>
i actually wanted it for something
<\\Mr_C\\>
i actually wanted it for something else
<\\Mr_C\\>
i have a pc that runs blueiris
<setkeh>
lol
<setkeh>
i mean
<setkeh>
run that script on your laptop
<setkeh>
it will explain itself a little better XD
<\\Mr_C\\>
and it has an interface to use an arduino to watch for inputs
<\\Mr_C\\>
and i wanted to use this microwave motion sensor
<\\Mr_C\\>
which has two pins that when motion is detected it shorts two pins
<\\Mr_C\\>
but im not sure how i would do it
<\\Mr_C\\>
i cant get the guy to do just serial pins, he only has it watch for arduino pins
<setkeh>
\\Mr_C\\: you can def use that board for that function and the script i just linked has the videos to show you how to do somthing simaler
asterick has quit [Quit: Leaving...]
<\\Mr_C\\>
oh
<\\Mr_C\\>
cool
<setkeh>
ill make a repo cuz ill probably make more scripts like that one for all the Tuts i find helpfull :D
