<drwasho> hey guys
<drwasho> I'm trying to install IPFS on Windows from source
<drwasho> FML
<drwasho> lol
<drwasho> Is there a definitive guide, because I'm lost in the weeds
<lgierth> you'll need the go tools
<lgierth> i'm not sure anyone ever actually tried building on windows
<drwasho> I can understand why tbh
<drwasho> lol
<lgierth> if you have the go tools it's go get github.com/whyrusleeping/gx and /gx-go
<lgierth> clone the go-ipfs repo, gx --verbose install --global
<lgierth> then cd cmd/ipfs && go build
<drwasho> ok i'll try that
<lgierth> if you have cygwin you can use the makefile
<drwasho> yep, downloading all.the.libraries in cygwin
<padz> wonder if the new bash shell will work

<computerfreak> Kubuxu: when u release 4.1, what does a user needs to do, to get new version?
<Kubuxu> (I am not in IPFS team) but if you used ipfs-update then you should just run ipfs-update
<computerfreak> ok cool if ipfs-update works now, should be fine ;)
<Kubuxu> if `which ipfs` doesn't end with `/go/bin/ipfs` inside then it will work out of the box
<Kubuxu> the fs:/ipns/dist.ipfs.io contains installer aslo

<noffle> perl is a great place to borrow readme ideas from
<noffle> they've been doing this for many years; and consistently!
<richardlitt> I don't trust zcei's implementation or repo.
<richardlitt> He's repeatedly opened repos like this, and I haven't seen him have the traction to get the stuff done. Lots of bikeshedding.
<richardlitt> I'm likewise guilty in some ways, which makes me a bit of a harsher critic
<richardlitt> See https://github.com/RichardLitt/readme-standard for my thoughts on how to avoid bikeshedding. Will make good on this promise by end of week.
<noffle> richardlitt: my issue isn't about zcei or his impl or even his approach
<richardlitt> that having been said, glad that you suggested perl, I didn't know that. cool!.
<noffle> that's noise around what I'm saying
<richardlitt> noffle: it's not. you opened an issue in that repo, I'm explaining why that might not be optimal in the logn run
<noffle> I only realized today that you weren't talking about his repo this whole time -- didn't know you had readme-standard
<richardlitt> yeah. Should probably just rename mine to standard-readme.
<noffle> I also have https://github.com/noffle/generate-readme, which I've been thinking for a while of turning into common-readme (same idea)
<richardlitt> I don't want to load this on my stack right now. Thanks though for pressuring me! Appreciate it.
<noffle> but it'd basically end up as a copy of the cpan readme with a few tweaks
<richardlitt> Yeah. I loved that.
<richardlitt> mm.
<noffle> richardlitt: are you being facetious? am I pressuring you?
<richardlitt> noffle: Nope. Pressuring may be too strong a word. Presencing this issue as somethign I should look at, in a really encouraging way. :)
<noffle> it'll be a tough battle: no one readme is going to win I imagine
<noffle> but polished options are great

<noffle> richardlitt: what are YOU doing today?
<richardlitt> Sure! for Monday, you mean?

<nicolagreco> richardlitt: we can schedule for monday sure! although if people are free earlier, than it would be great to have in in the next couple of days
<dignifiedquire> nicolagreco: I understood the issue quite well I think
<richardlitt> nicolagreco: I'm confused. What is the hangout for? Mondays are when we have our biweekly long hangouts
<nicolagreco> richardlitt: ha! sorry, let me give you the context. I would like to discuss an issue I raised with mildred, dignifiedquire
<nicolagreco> richardlitt: .. and jbenet and the other interested people in IPLD, but it is just about clarifying and thinking through
<nicolagreco> richardlitt: .. the issue and possible solutions - it is basically an IPLD hangout, but since it is tuesday and it would take a week
<richardlitt> Ok, so, an IPLD hangout? It might be best to have that on Monday
<nicolagreco> richardlitt: .. it would be great to have it earlier
cemerick has joined #ipfs
<richardlitt> Ok. I would open an issue in github.com/ipfs/pm/issues
<nicolagreco> richardlitt: .. so I thought that there could be a repository when I can just propose meetings (beyond mondays)
<richardlitt> And ping all of the people who you would like to be involved.
<nicolagreco> richardlitt: that ^
<nicolagreco> thanks!
<richardlitt> np. Thanks for asking!
<haad> noffle: I realized today that there might be a generic ipfs-log replicator cooking in orbit-db
<haad> noffle: will try to separate that to its own module when I start building the CRDTs
<noffle> haad: excellent
<noffle> haad: how does it replicate? duplex stream?
<haad> noffle: from pubsub
<noffle> many:many pubsub is a duplex stream :)
jaboja has quit [Ping timeout: 248 seconds]
<noffle> hyperlog exposes replication this way in a *really* powerful and generic way: https://github.com/mafintosh/hyperlog#replicate-graph
<noffle> makes it very flexible; not tied to any one impl (like pubsub)
<noffle> this also makes writing tests super easy, because you can just wire things up together /wo any network/pubsub stubs, etc
<haad> ummm, had something else in mind as to what "replication" means. but yeah, it can use streams and make the API very simple.
<noffle> (in theory, this should just be each side sending over their heads, and working backwards to understand which entries each side is missing)
<noffle> oh -- what were you thinking?
<haad> I think pubsub is the center piece of the module
<haad> receive from (ipfs) pubsub, send to (ipfs) pubsub, merge logs, done
<noffle> I think we're talking about the same thing: a duplex stream models this (I put new entries into the stream, and get other new entries I didn't know about out of it)
sivachandran has joined #ipfs
<haad> possibly
<haad> ideally the user doesn't have know anything about streams (duplex or not)
<noffle> it's much more powerful for the user to think about replication streams than to worry about what specific impl is being used (pubsub, etc)
<noffle> streams are a node (and now js) primitive; pubsub is a very particular concept on top
<haad> ...and an ipfs-log replicator is a very particular concept on top of both :)
<noffle> it's great to let the user operate on language primitives as much as possible rather than invent new data structures on top to use (and reinvent the wheel with)
<noffle> right
<noffle> it's like the alan perlis quote: "It is better to have 100 functions operate on one data structure than 10 functions on 10 data structures"
<noffle> he was talking about node streams (he just didn't know it yet)
<haad> sure
<noffle> fewer data types and more primitive functions
<haad> noffle: right now it's one function (sync), so I reckon providing a generic stream api should be *trivial*
M-fil is now known as fil_redpill
<noffle> probably, but it's more work to go backwards (adding primitives on top of custom types) than to use primitives as the underlying base

<daviddias> kevina: ah it is a specific code question, any specific part?
<kevina> It looks like objects are being stored as Merkle DAG objects in .ipfs/blocks/*.
<mandelbrot> are there any status updates on filecoin?
<kevina> I am interesting in finding a way to separate out the raw data in a separate file?
<kevina> This again relates to https://github.com/ipfs/go-ipfs/issues/875.
<achin> the data in .ipfs/blocks are protobuf-encoded objects. the protobuf definition is in the merkledag/pb/*.proto fil
<kevina> thanks looking...
<richardlitt> thanks achin
<richardlitt> mandelbrot: not at the moment!
<richardlitt> Thanks for your interest, though. We'll get there.

<kevina> I.e. is the object already passes as a protocol buffer to the datastore

<kevina> achin: thanks
<achin> but i will add this: the Data field within PBNode can be arbitrary data. most of the time it's a protobuf-encoded unixfs object (see unixfs/pb/*.proto), but it need not be

<kevina> So can someone point me to where in the code data is packed into a protobuf?
<ianopolous> achin: except for apps that use object.patch directly to store their own data formats (that is all Peergos uses for example)
<kevina> Are more to the point, is data passed into the Datastore interface already a protobuf object?
<kevina> Are = Or :)
<kevina> That is "Or more to the point, ..."

<alu> to get nodejs v5 first
<alu> then ill apt-get install npm
