I was wondering about something: say I find a file online. Like 1.txt. Can I get its hash added to ipfs without downloading it to an ipfs node or pinning it? eg: just read the file somehow and get enough info to figure out its hash (eg its ipfs url?)

so you're hosting the file chunks without having the actual file?
<locusf>
erm ..
<locusf>
I meant that ipfs add won't copy it to the directory it hosts from
<JCaesar>
that's --nocopy

was thinking of if you were using ipfs as its simplest form for video distribution, then add "annotations" or description to a video

q6wgrkd8tr9o49j8: many video container formats do allow the kinda of metadata that you'd put in a video description. few actually use it, tho.
<TUSF>
Don't think any video players actually display this date tho.
