microblogging, Reddit, etc. are basically 4chan for people who can't figure out 4chan
<Swedneck>
i use mastodon mostly to see discussions and links
<r0kk3rz>
or dont want to deal with 4chan :P
<TUSF>
now I'm thinking up of a structure for a forum over ipfs. hah.
sander has joined #ipfs
<r0kk3rz>
yeah its doable for sure
<r0kk3rz>
js-ipfs connectivity issues have mostly stopped people from creating them just yet though

meh, for now you can just have people access it over a gateway.

how would a fully distributed forum work?

The way I'm imaging it is having clients (gateway) connect over pubsub to exchange data, like the latest posts and updates to posts. The posts themselves would be IPLD objects, linking to forum threads together.
vivus has left #ipfs [#ipfs]
sander has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<Swedneck>
yeah but what about moderation and stuff
<TUSF>
Figure that peer IDs can be seen as something like usernames. "Mods" would have their PeerIDs added to a list of moderators, and when clients receive info about certain posts being "blocked" and so on, the client would remove and ignore those posts.
<TUSF>
Granted, people can probably make their own client that ignores the mods.
<TUSF>
4chan still had mods that delete posts. Some people use extensions to retain and retrieve deleted posts.
<Swedneck>
how do you decide who is a moderator though?
<Swedneck>
if a single person decides, that's centralization
<TUSF>
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
<TUSF>
Still distributed.
<r0kk3rz>
ermagerd centralization, kill it
<r0kk3rz>
in all seriousness, not everything has to be decentralised++
<Swedneck>
i'd probably begin with some hand picked mods, and then have some magical system of voting or some shit
<TUSF>
I've considered a voting system. Those systems can be hijacked by spammers
<Swedneck>
so you can be decentralized while you decentralize
<r0kk3rz>
ok xzibit
<Swedneck>
xzibittorrent
<r0kk3rz>
moderating on ipfs can be interesting though, if each post is its own block, and people stop holding the blocks, then it slowly disappears
<Swedneck>
actually how about just implementing what we use for politics?
w17t has quit [Quit: Leaving]
<r0kk3rz>
everything is politics
<Swedneck>
decentralized politics
<r0kk3rz>
is there any other kind?
<TUSF>
Actually, here's a thought: thread starters are the mods to their own threads.
<TUSF>
The latest posts and such exist on an ipns key, on the OP's node.
<r0kk3rz>
that relies upon the OP to maintain an index
<TUSF>
it does kinda mean that the thread dies once the OP's client or node dies...
<TUSF>
It kinda replicates the volatile nature of 4chan
<Swedneck>
hmm, just noticed discord won't embed ipfs gateway URLs where you've kept the filename of something
<TUSF>
Hrmm... My system may also require OPs to run software locally, to maintain the thread...
shizy has joined #ipfs
sander has joined #ipfs
<TUSF>
I suppose each individual client can maintain their own index of the thread, and send updates to newcomers.
<Swedneck>
ideally you shouldn't have to run your own node
<Swedneck>
dunno how feasible that is though
<TUSF>
haha... 4chan types might actually like that aspect, as it creates a barrier to entry, lol
<Swedneck>
deep web
<TUSF>
By that point it's already on the dark web
sander has quit [Ping timeout: 240 seconds]
<TUSF>
That said, ipfs isn't really anonymous, so I guess that would also drive them away.
<Swedneck>
i just realized the gateways are what makes ipfs so much better than other similar things, like zeronet
<Swedneck>
without ipfs.io it'd be kind of deep web-ish
<TUSF>
Yeah
<r0kk3rz>
js-ipfs is the real ticket
<TUSF>
That said, I've seen lots of people on 4chan or 8ch that are really hoping for i2p or tor support.

<TUSF>
I dunno, I haven't used tor myself, so...
<r0kk3rz>
ipfs by design advertises everything you access, so its not amazing from a privacy/anonymity perspective
<tidux[m]>
plus iirc DHT will broadcast all connected peers
<tidux[m]>
which means it'd be possible to triangulate your IP given a few bad peers
tibor has quit [Quit: Connection closed for inactivity]
<TUSF>
Right, well, some people want to be able to use ipfs without announcing their IP address.
<TUSF>
For example, in my forum idea, you'd be able to look in on everyone's peer ID, and look at their IP address
