<skyfox> hello all!
<nixze> stebalien: Hi sorry for pinging you, in regards to discussion in https://github.com/ipfs/faq/issues/22 What I'm trying to reach is to be able to share sourcecode and other things just by sharing hashes, to begin with it would have to run with absolutely minimal dependencies; https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?p=8242234

<stebalien> nixze: go binaries are static so built binaries would be pretty portable (assuming a given architecture). The tricky part would be knowing the correct "add" parameters. However, they could probably be added to the CID (the "hash"). That is, `QmId...:raw-leaves:layout=trickle`
<nixze> stebalien: Gentoo is a source based distribution, so "ipfsmh" needs to be built, and the time it would need to build it probably needs to be on par with other hash utilities from "nothing installed" If I was just able to understand how the hashes are created, I wouldn't mind implementing it in Python myself (which already is a requirement in Gentoo), I hope to in the process also contribute to IPFS

<stebalien> So, the "hash" is the root of a merkle tree. You'd need to reconstruct that to construct a hash. Doing that is non-trivial (ipfs is a filesystem so think inodes, indirect inodes, directories, etc).
<stebalien> Note: building go binaries is really fast and you could easily bundle all your project's code into a single tarball (we do that for go-ipfs here: https://dist.ipfs.io/go-ipfs/v0.4.16/go-ipfs-source.tar.gz).
<stebalien> The only tricky part would be compiling the go compiler itself (which, as usual, requires bootstrapping).
<nixze> stebalien: thanks, I will read up on the CIDs and how they work.
muvlon_ has joined #ipfs
<nixze> forcing all Gentoo users to install (compile) go, won't sit well so for now I will have to get this done without go

<stebalien> You can do that, it'll just be tricky and the documentation is, unfortunately, limited.

<Modding> it depends on the Nodes
<Modding> where your files are pinned
<JCaesar> abax1: my impression is: dont use it for anything serious. but there are people doing exactly that.
<Modding> JCaesar, atm i am building a Music streaming Service based on IPFS
ebryn has quit [Quit: Connection closed for inactivity]
<Modding> But i will provide my own IPFS Nodes stored in multiple Datacenter for pinning the Music files
<abax1> ok, so I need to read up on the pinning aspect.
<abax1> thanks
<Modding> (no copyright issues because only CC Music is availible)
<Modding> abax1, its easy
<fiatjaf> Modding, I think you should make people pin and host their own nodes
<fiatjaf> and serve just as the indexer/aggregator
<Modding> if you have a ipfs node just type: ipfs pin add HASH
<JCaesar> Modding: what was that about the DHT degredation plaging the arch mirror?
<abax1> @Modding, thanks!
<Modding> fiatjaf, yes of corse, but i will also pin all files for more BW and more security
<abax1> I intend using it to store data associated with my blockchain.
charlton has quit [Ping timeout: 240 seconds]
<Modding> for instance my test song is QmYMkRUC8jHJqwAc5Dm7XSKbewsttrknpqBWq5yGSdAbcy and i have stored it on my little home IPFS node ... but i can pin it on my datacenter nodes as well
charlton has joined #ipfs
<Modding> i just take every hash, store it in a DB and provide a API wich lists the hashes. Than the hashes will be pinned at my remote locations
<Modding> woo got to go now
