Is there a way to adjust the swarm HighWater config on the fly? I've tried "ipfs config Swarm.ConnMgr.HighWater 300" and many others with no success yet.

<fiatjaf>
does the s3 datastore for ipfs work?
<fiatjaf>
can I use it without having to recompile ipfs or something like that?
<fiatjaf>
what happens if I use it? will my s3 bill go to the stratosphere because of bandwidth usage?

first of all the s3 datastore is really really slow. but i don't think it has been maintained for yours. yeah you'd have to compile a custom version of go-ipfs
<Fns[m]>
My ipfs-companion was unable to detect it as ipfs for some reason.
<darkdrgn2k[m]>
Dam companion always a problem
<darkdrgn2k[m]>
I wonder why
<Fns[m]>
Not sure how it works, I thought it's supposed to detect patterns like */ipfs/<something_hashlike>?
<darkdrgn2k[m]>
It is
<darkdrgn2k[m]>
And that's what is linked
<darkdrgn2k[m]>
Let me install it again (hate there is no off button)

lgierth: we kinda gave up on ipns.. its very unpredictable :(
<Fns[m]>
darkdrgn2k: Off button for companion? There is actually
<lgierth>
darkdrgn2k[m]: yeah ben texted me that much earlier today :) we're getting significantly more dht nodes up tonight
<darkdrgn2k[m]>
you running companion in which mode
<darkdrgn2k[m]>
lgierth: but i though we were doing pubsub ipns
<darkdrgn2k[m]>
oo companion looks differnt

darkdrgn2k: Local custom gateway (go-ipfs), not automatic (maybe that's the problem, but it used to work on other links)
pcardune has joined #ipfs
<darkdrgn2k[m]>
ok let me instlal ipfs loocal
<darkdrgn2k[m]>

wirde
<darkdrgn2k[m]>
its playing for me to
<Fns[m]>
I've ticked automatic, now it detects hashes I copy-paste into address-bar. But I can't connect to stream now, it keeps searching
<darkdrgn2k[m]>
i dont have "automatic" anymore
<darkdrgn2k[m]>
i think there is anew version out
<darkdrgn2k[m]>
sop your using External right?
<Fns[m]>
Hm, if I add your server to list of public gateways, it redirects fine those hashes that I paste into address-bar, but refuses to load your stream

<darkdrgn2k[m]>
you got the ?url=live.m3u8 right?
<Fns[m]>
Yes, that's the link I'm opening. Don't have it in companion settings, of course

tl;dr the choice was to a) break websites due to false-positive CORS error or b) ignore cross-origin XHR in Firefox for now. Companion does (b) for now. I agree, it is very frustrating, but there is nothing we can do about it at this time.
<fiatjaf>
ok, last question: how does the datastore interaction work? does ipfs keep calling .Query() on the datastore all day? does it call .Query() whenever another node asks for a hash it doesn't even know if it has or not? when does it call .Query()?
<fiatjaf>
(I know zero about how content is discovered on an ipfs network)

I take that (CORS XHR in FF) back, there is a way to make it work via c) late redirects at a price of small overhead and privacy leakage

<stebalien>
Is it possible to create directory structures with the writable gateway (without the full API)?
<lgierth>
stebalien: yeah you should be able to post or put to :8080/ipfs/QmUNLL.../doesnt/exist/heres-my-file.txt
<lgierth>
and get a hash for the top of that dir returned
<lgierth>
it uses the dageditor under the hood
