<nly> hi all
<nly> where can i learn about ipns?
Adbray has joined #ipfs
<fiatjaf> schmars[m], I've filed it: https://github.com/ipfs/go-ipfs/issues/5309
<fiatjaf> schmars[m], why can't it just use relative links?
<makeworld[m]> IPNS stands for the interplanetary naming system. It allows ipfs to have mutable content. Whenever you add a file to ipfs you get a hash. If you change that file, you get a different hash, and no way to change it. IPNS allows you to publish an address under /ipns/Qmsomething, which points to whatever /ipfs hash you want. Whenever you change your file, you republish the ipns address so that it points towards the new hash.
<makeworld[m]> And the link you give people is the /ipns one, because it will always update.
<makeworld[m]> nly ^^^
<lgierth> fiatjaf: thanks -- it does usually, when it gets a /ipfs or /ipns path
<lgierth> it's only that the gateway code can't make sense of $cid.ipfs.dweb.link yet, for the purpose of links in directory listings
<nly> thanks makeworld[m]

<void9> anyone here know of solutions to fuse mount ipfs in a reasonably fast way?
<void9> and is any way to force ipfs to download the blocks of a file sequentially ?
<lgierth> void9: you mean differently than what `ipfs pin add` does? there's `ipfs refs -r`
<void9> i don't quite understand the concept of 'pin add' I'm afraid
<lgierth> pinning just means your node will *definitely* hold on to the data
<lgierth> and won't remove it e.g. when running garbage collection
<lgierth> pinning has a specific way of fetching data that it doesn't have yet
<void9> ok just read about it. seems to be the default behaviour with ipfs add
<lgierth> and refs -r has a different way
<lgierth> yeah that too
<void9> i only used pin so far, and tested between my pc and vm hosted on my pc, all in the same network
<void9> not only it's incredibly slow, it hangs, when accessing/copying ipfs files mounted via fuse
<lgierth> try fetching the stuff with `pin add` or `refs -r` first
<lgierth> to make sure it's an issue with fuse (or not)
<void9> lgierth: well that kind of defeats the purpose, don't you think ?
<void9> oh
<lgierth> well yeah, but there's a problem and we're trying to debug, right? :)
<void9> well I am sure it would work okay if I had the files on local storage first.. but I was hoping it would work more like in a "streaming" way
<void9> fetch the parts the filesystem seeks to first, so it doesn't feel like I am on dial up when using ipfs in this way
<lgierth> that it should already be doing. at least the gateway knows what to fetch first for requests with a Range header (e.g. when skipping forward in a video)
<lgierth> i'm not 100% sure fuse does that too (i'm just not familiar with fuse that much)
<void9> I didn't try it with a video, but with a partition image file I tried to mount

<void9> why did it work and now it does not, and how can i fix it?
<lgierth> fiatjaf: that should work
<lgierth> we've been doing that with all ipfs project related websites for years
<lgierth> just make sure to still use relative links, so that it also works with e.g. /ipns/example.com or /ipfs/QmExample
<lgierth> many static site generators have an option to use relative links

<Chaos_Zero> Are there any libraries available at this time to act as a redirect for a web app to view IPFS data similar to the web portal on ipfs.io? For example I am used to developing web apps in python-flask, and I would be interested to 'host' some of the static content on IPFS. Either clients would download all data through my server, but it could originate from another ipfs peer, or some javascript framework would allow downloading the referenced content
<Chaos_Zero> directly from the ipfs peers to the client browser.
<Chaos_Zero> Obviously this is a novelty at this point and not a serious site
<altairmn> Chaos_Zero, best you can do is use some file structure viewing library and use js-ipfs-api to retrieve the file structure for given hash
<altairmn> there might be a library out there but I don't know about it
