<ullbeking> i'm considering various boards and some of them have "optional" SPI NOR flash
<ullbeking> if the chip isn't present on the board
<ullbeking> then is there much point to installing one?
<ullbeking> i think it would be a good educational exercise?

<ullbeking> KotCzarny: what do you mean by "the onboard one"? I thought some OPis have an onboard SPI, others have it "optional", in which case you would need to solder it on yourself? Please see my question in #orangepi.
<KotCzarny> i dont go to orangepi
<ullbeking> I'm trying to revive it
<ullbeking> Should I post that question here?
<KotCzarny> if it's generic and related to sunxi dev, sure
<ullbeking> Ok
<KotCzarny> oh and if it isn't covered by wiki already
<KotCzarny> so check spi page
reinforce has joined #linux-sunxi
<ullbeking> I did check and the reason I posted is because of conflicting info
<KotCzarny> then ask and wait for someone with experience to answer

<ullbeking> 05:11 <ullbeking> does opi zero come with 2 MB SPI NOR flash chip or not? different spec sheets say different things
<ullbeking> 05:17 <ullbeking> it's more clearly shown to be present here (512 MB SDRAM version) https://www.aliexpress.com/item/New-Orange-Pi-Zero-H2-Quad-Core-Open-source-512MB-development-board-beyond-Raspberry-Pi/32761500374.html
<ullbeking> 05:11 <ullbeking> here it's missing: http://www.orangepi.org/orangepizero/

<KotCzarny> but you are free to use spi1 and higher if they are availablr for other purposes

<KotCzarny> as for that particular board, best to ask vendor before buying
<KotCzarny> i would bet its present, looking at the picture

<ullbeking> KotCzarny: ty, yeah that's good advice. The delivery times are so long on all these products that you want to get it right, up front.
<ullbeking> Also, not sure I'll need or want to be fooling around with SPI flash. Is writing to one of these things similar to flashing a coreboot BIOS?
<beeble> u-boot supports writing to flash or if you configure the kernel right you have a mtdblock. so pretty easy
<beeble> so no need for coreboot flashprog tool
sunxi_fan has joined #linux-sunxi
<ullbeking> beeble: but you still need to use a clip on the SPI chip and set up a device to electrically write the correct firmware, right?
diego__ has joined #linux-sunxi
<beeble> no
<beeble> there are drivers in u-boot and the kernel. both can access the flash directly
<beeble> for initial flashing you can boot from sd card or use fel
