matthias_bgg has joined #linux-sunxi
<KotCzarny> uboot is loaded from sdcard
<damex> is there some <other> channel that i can ask about linux/device-tree? want to spin up my octeon3 board (works though) and it is not related to #sunxi
<Pinchiukas> KotCzarny: so uboot that's somewhere on-chip chainloads uboot that's on the SD card?

<plaes> has anyone added VGA output to A20-based devices?
<wens> nope

<plaes> any idea how is hsync/vsync handled?
<plaes> A20-Olinuxino-Micro takes the LCD-{H,V}SYNC pins
<wens> probably also need a connection from TCON to VGA connector

<wens> I somehow doubt that
<plaes> gotta test it out :D
<JohnDoe_71Rus> any chance A20 tv-out?
<plaes> maybe
<wens> plaes: mainline doesn't support the TVE on the A20, so just adding an overlay doesn't quite get there
<wens> armbian seems to be carrying a whole lot of patches for sunxi though
<plaes> yeah, there could be something extra
<plaes> I'll dig into it today...
[noFocksGiven] is now known as [HackIT]
<plaes> btw, could it have been just simplefb that was carried over from u-boot?
<Pinchiukas> If SD card goes before the internal storage in uboot, why do I need to have uboot in the SD card as well?
<plaes> what's your internal storage?
<plaes> anyway, if your internal storage is supported by bootrom, then you don't need u-boot on SDcard
<wens> plaes: possible :p

<Pinchiukas> plaes: just what I have on the A20 device - where the stock Android is located.
<KotCzarny> its like asking why you have to have grub on hdd2 when you select the drive in bios to be bootable (even if you have hdd1 with uboot as well)
<Pinchiukas> I think if uboot as being grub as opposed to the bios. :)
<KotCzarny> anyway, uboot of android is old and not easily configurable
<KotCzarny> thats why its better to have one on sdcard too
<Pinchiukas> Well still it's good news that I don't have to solder on a UART or stuff like that. :)
<KotCzarny> uart comes VERY handy
<Pinchiukas> Yeah I know but it's such a huge PITA to get one for me. :/
<KotCzarny> create adapter with pogo pins
<KotCzarny> :)

<Pinchiukas> I don't suppose there is a way so that I wouldn't have to hold it?
<KotCzarny> depends on your skills

<Pinchiukas> Close to non-existent. I don't even own a soldering iron ffs!
bauen1_ has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
<KotCzarny> this is the uart 'adapter' i made long time ago
<Pinchiukas> Hahah
<Pinchiukas> Damn!
<KotCzarny> something had to be placed on it to make the contact tho
<KotCzarny> still, worked for the task i had to make
<Pinchiukas> From what stage would I be able to see something through a HDMI attached screen if I'm booting linux in a SD card?
cnxsoft has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
<KotCzarny> my soldering skills are in imaginary realm
<KotCzarny> uboot can display to hdmi/lcd if configured properly
<Pinchiukas> So I guess probably after my own uboot kicks in, right? :)
<KotCzarny> yes
<Pinchiukas> Ah that's still pretty good.
cnxsoft has joined #linux-sunxi
<KotCzarny> but you can also boot over usb
<KotCzarny> saves some card shuffling and time
<Pinchiukas> What card shuffling???
<KotCzarny> when you compile own uboot, you rarely get 100% working one on first try
<Pinchiukas> Yeah I fully expect that of myself. :D
<Pinchiukas> But I mean... I have a card reader in the device itself. Or will I not be able to use it?
<KotCzarny> up to you, but after 10 or 20 swaps of the sdcard to pc to write new uboot because previous one didnt work as expected, you will know what i mean
<Pinchiukas> Ok fair enough, but how would it be different with a USB storage device?
* karlp hugs felboot
<KotCzarny> because then, you send uboot via usb
<KotCzarny> no writing needed (apart from one time fel-trigger sdcard)
<Pinchiukas> Don't I unplug a USB stick or a HDD from the device, plug it into my laptop and do pretty much the same as with an SD card?
<KotCzarny> nope
<KotCzarny> different direction
<Pinchiukas> Or were you thinking about using the UART?
<KotCzarny> pc will act as a host
<KotCzarny> device will act as a device
<Pinchiukas> Oh, I had no idea that was possbile! I have no idea how that works.
<KotCzarny> ever heard about usb otg?
<mps> netboot
<Pinchiukas> Yeah, I think I even have an adapter somewhere.
<KotCzarny> mps: i storngly suspect he has some tablet without eth port
<mps> uh
<mps> I thought it is SBC (board)
<Pinchiukas> I have an Android TV box with A20.
<KotCzarny> but for netboot he still needs to have prepared sdcard
<Pinchiukas> So wait, now you're talking about yet another option - netboot. I'm already confused enough. :)
jonhmut has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<KotCzarny> for starters get some a20 image and check how far it boots, might be good enough for further tweaking
<Pinchiukas> That's a good idea. Where do I get me one of those?
<KotCzarny> armbian.com ?
<KotCzarny> darn, they no longer have 'sort by soc' feature
<Pinchiukas> Yeah :)
<KotCzarny> banana pi m1 is a20 based for sure
<Pinchiukas> Cool, thanks!
<KotCzarny> hah
<Pinchiukas> Well played!
<KotCzarny> anyway, you will have to do some wiki reading
<KotCzarny> that fex thing has all information about pins, devices included etc
<Pinchiukas> I don't suppose there is a way to serve that image to my device from a Mac?
<KotCzarny> probably there is
<Pinchiukas> My device has a single button. When I press it the LED goes out and the screen goes blank. But since after pressing it again I get the screen back instantly, it's not a power-off/reset button. Can it be that FEL button thing?

<hexdump0815> jernej: i just built v5.9 for my h6 based on the megous tree and added your ac200 driver and now get "ac200-ephy ac200-ephy: Unable to find calibration data!" now and then - eth is working fine - any idea? where can i find the latest version of the ac200 code?
<hexdump0815> jernej: with 5.6 i did not get this error
<hexdump0815> megi: i got lots of "sun6i-rtc 7000000.rtc: rtc is still busy." with your v5.9 tree and for me going from 15 to 14 like mentioned here https://patchwork.kernel.org/project/linux-arm-kernel/patch/20190412120730.473-3-megous@megous.com/#22798591 and here https://lkml.org/lkml/2019/8/24/105 fixed it for me too ...
<megi> that's not a fix though
<hexdump0815> megi: at least the message is gone that way :) - its an eachlink h6 mini tv box btw."
<megi> I think your change auto-switches RTC clk source to internal RC oscillator, can you measure RTC precision after your patch is applied?
<hexdump0815> how do i measure this?
<megi> just do hwclock -s now and after 10 minutes :)
<megi> and and observe how much system clock changes
<megi> or just hwclock -r
<megi> and compare with wall clock
<megi> it will probaby go off by ~10%
<hexdump0815> you are right - it seems to run slower quite a bit - is there any way to fix this?
<megi> you can check the board for any crystals, maybe they cheaped out and didn't use 32768Hz crystal for the RTC and that's why it doesn't work
asdf28 has quit [Ping timeout: 258 seconds]
<megi> anyway, I guess we can enable the autoswitching to RC oscillator on H6, but the patch will need to be a more proper. instead of changing the define to incorrect value, we'd have to add correct code for enabling the autoswitch feature
<hexdump0815> i guess so then - the box is closed right now but as most tv boxes its most probably not really the best quality of electronics :)
<megi> maybe here's where it should be, by the shape of it :)
<megi> XC4
<hexdump0815> minimalism ;)
<megi> that board looks like it supports 5 different configuration options for everything

<hexdump0815> not too uncommon for tv boxes ... some of the eachlink h6 minis even were missing resistors for the serial console - mine too
<hexdump0815> in older kernels (5.6, 5.4) i did not get that message - was there simply no warning or was there something else different?
