That's what I was thinking. But from montjoie's comments, I thought it might be used to encrypt different parts of the data with different passwords, which is confusing.
<willmore>
Just dump the data here with a public key crypto key where libv holds the private key. That way I get a big blob of meaningless binary stuff that's only useful if libv asks for it again and uses their key to decrypt it.
<willmore>
That's what I've used for backups in the past and it worked well. It's messier than rsync, but it leaves nothing in plain text at the untrusted (my end) storage location.
<willmore>
There are more complex ways to do it with encryption at the endpoint, but they're vastly more complex.

<montjoie>
willmore: password are probably in the wiki DB, so if you want to backup the whole DB, you need to check that.
<montjoie>
for me you wanted to do public backup, but if only private backup is wanted, encrypt the whole is easier
<montjoie>
but with a private backup libv became a spof for the wiki life
<libv>
KotCzarny: (who's dropped off): it was gone when i tried it
<libv>
heh, must've been temporary
<libv>
fixed
<libv>
as for backup, it needs to be done, it does not matter too much where the backups are stored
<libv>
i have a fileserver here with backup, and the bandwidth, and i have my own hetzner server sitting 4kms away (which i deduced only by knowing that there is a hetzner site between nuernberg and fuerth, and that the ping time is quite ok)
<libv>
and no, i am not the hoster of linux-sunxi, i paid for it for a while until i lost interest a few years ago (several moons before the fosdem video project revived my interest) and now mnemoc (who started it and paid for it for most of its existence
<libv>
i do have root access, as does iirc Turl, as we were sunxiers of the first hour
<libv>
and a lot of my time in 2013/2014 was spent on making the wiki into what it is, with its base structure, so a i am very aware of the value of the wiki
<Werner>
Regarding ping. Depends on the routing. There was a time hetzner did not have a direct peering with Telekom which resulted in bad bandwidth and pings especially during evenings. They solved this by offering "double paid traffic". Fortunately these times are over now.
<libv>
ok, then perhaps it is just wishful thinking

libv: backups alone aren't a silver bullet, there is also the bus factor to consider, which you seem to have covered to some extend

libv, I'm not trying to guilt or bully anyone. I was just pointing out that if BW or storage were the issue, those can be solved. Thank you for all your work on the wiki!

enough to be able to recreate the contents of the wiki

i am doing an irregular dl.linux-sunxi.org rsync as well

i will see how it performs in the next few days
