ChanServ changed the topic of ##yamahasynths to: Channel dedicated to questions and discussion of Yamaha FM Synthesizer internals and corresponding REing. Discussion of synthesis methods similar to the Yamaha line of chips, Sound Blasters + clones, PCM chips like RF5C68, and CD theory of operation are also on-topic. Channel logs: https://freenode.irclog.whitequark.org/~h~yamahasynths

<Foone_> so I have a stupid idea: PC/104 is a superset of ISA, right? So I could totally take an open source sound blaster clone, say a Snort Boomer, and just rebuild it to have a different connector and bam. soundblaster support on a PC/104 expansion card!
<whitequark> Snort Boomer
<Foone_> Snare Bodger
<protosphere> I’ve been considering doing something similar with this weird 8086 system I have
<Wohali> Snape Borger
<protosphere> The expansion slots are Almost ISA
<Wohali> ...Slade Booger?
<Foone_> protosphere: oh, what machine is that? something like a tandy or some weird portable?
<protosphere> MyBrain 3000/JB-3000
<protosphere> There’s very little evidence that it ever existed.
<Foone_> that's always a fun problem to have
<protosphere> http://nivelleringslikaren.eu/stepone/ has some info on the European version of it
<protosphere> The dump is from my machine
<protosphere> (well, the rom dumps)
<Foone_> neat!
<protosphere> I also have the mystical 8-inch disk controller for it which has absolutely zero documentation
<protosphere> so that’s been fun
<protosphere> Are the SA1099s required for operation of the SB? I only ordered one by accident
<Foone_> no. only if you want CMS support
<Foone_> very little supports CMS so you can definitely get by without the SA1099s
<Sarayan> cms?
<Foone_> Creative Music System, aka the Game Blaster.
<protosphere> Ah, cool
<Sarayan> ahhh
<superctr_> SAA1099 is a quite capable PSG-type chip, if you want to use it for some custom project
<superctr_> 6 channels, small package, weird envelope generators, what more could you ask for
<superctr_> oh and it has stereo output too

<Foone_> I'm not saying I'm a massive nerd, but I had a dream about this channel: I met someone from here who had built a custom PCB for testing OPL2/3 chips they'd gotten off ebay, because so many of them were fakes
<Foone_> it was a stand-alone little thing that had a microcontroller on it of some sort that'd run the chip through the paces and give you a GOOD or BAD signal with LEDs
<Foone_> with protection so you wouldn't end up frying it if you got a really unlucky re-label
<MicroHex> I mean, that's not an extroidinarily difficult problem to solve
<MicroHex> I'd expect if someone was making Snark Barker or Snoop Booper kits, they'd want something like that
<Foone_> I imagine sticking it in a PC and playing sound through it isn't too dangerous. you'd have to really really screw up a chip to make it fry your motherboard, and that seems unlikely
<Foone_> you could maybe take out your DSP though
<MicroHex> I'm thinking a standalone MCU board with analog in.
<MicroHex> Compare output to a known good dataset, within some margin
<Foone_> yah. sounds like a plan. who's designing it, then?
<whitequark> if it's opl2 or opl3 you could just put a zif on a glasgow :P
<Foone_> if we had any ham we could have ham & eggs if we had any eggs
<whitequark> esden can send you a revC1 proto
<Foone_> eh, I was mainly joking, as I'm just gonna wait until a less proto-typey version
<Foone_> I have enough stuff on my plate without dealing with a prototype board and trying to help fix it on top of everything
<whitequark> you don't need to
<whitequark> opl2/3 works on every single glasgow revision in existence
<whitequark> it's pretty much turnkey and i've already fixed all the bugs that could hit it; it's a prototype in the sense that it's not mass produced yet
<whitequark> it=opl2/3 that is
<Foone_> https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/w2EAAOSwLJ9cxkRI/s-l1600.jpg this is blurry but interesting. it's a packard-bell labeled Aztech soundcard (probably a Sound Galaxy?) but it's interesting because it's an 8-bit clone of the sound blaster. usually I only see 16-bit ones

<cr1901_web> I... don't really want to talk about this, but... I should mention, something pretty bad happened the past week; I was diagnosed w/ lymphoma. Chances are, I'll live, thank f***.I hope I have time to work on Yamaha stuff, and I'm certainly going to try. But I'll need some time.

<Foone_> dang! sorry to hear that. let us know if there's anything we can do to help!
<Foone_> best of luck with the treatment
<ej5> everyone ok?
<cr1901_web> ej5: I was diagnosed w/ lymphoma.
<ej5> i'm very sorry to hear that.
<cr1901_web> Yes, me too lol
<cr1901_web> Good news is I'll likely live :)
<cr1901_web> Bad news is well... it's fucking lymphoma
<ej5> that's rough man. fuck cancer.
<cr1901_web> Foone: >let us know if there's anything we can do to help!
<cr1901_web> Tyvm
<fseidel> best wishes in fighting this. Cancer sucks.
<cr1901_web> Tyvm. W/o going into detail about finances, I will be looking for odd jobs to do in the near future for some income if someone can help w/ that :D.
