ChanServ changed the topic of ##yamahasynths to: Channel dedicated to questions and discussion of Yamaha FM Synthesizer internals and corresponding REing. Discussion of synthesis methods similar to the Yamaha line of chips, Sound Blasters + clones, PCM chips like RF5C68, and CD theory of operation are also on-topic. <ej5> whitequark, i've always wondered about that. i suspect it has to do with the way DMA works
<cr1901_modern> whitequark: I shouldn't have said it was unbuffered. That was me mispeaking/misremembering the actual details.
<cr1901_modern> I should've said "slot 8 is special and attached to the rest of the system differently", which would've covered my ass :P
<cr1901_modern> It seems I actually _reversed_ it. Slots 1 to 7 are unbuffered (well, cards provide their own TTL buffers anyway in practice), and slot 8 is behind a bunch of main board buffers.
<cr1901_modern> http://www.minuszerodegrees.net/5150/misc/5150_address_bus.jpg Contrast to the 5150, all the ISA slots have a direct connection to CPU
<ej5> the theory that sounds most plausible to me is that it's meant for cards that provide additional system I/O devices in address range 0h-ffh
<cr1901_modern> I'm not aware of anything that prevents standard cards from fulfilling that role... if they're designed to respond to 0-ff, they will
<cr1901_modern> just bad things will happen
<cr1901_modern> I don't see how putting the card behind some buffers will prevent said bus contention from happening
<cr1901_modern> w/ the 0-ffh range
<ej5> it's meant so that bad things *wont* happen
<ej5> it puts them on the same side of the buffers as the rest of the system devices
<cr1901_modern> hmmm... well, less* bad things happen if such a card is on the same side as the rest of the system devices
<cr1901_modern> and an addr conflict occurs
<cr1901_modern> ... wait, wouldn't that mostly affect the data bus tho?

<ej5> ugh these morons pulled the card from a PC 3270 instead of selling it as one unit
<cr1901_modern> >After development work on the ALMSC (AdLib Music Synthesizer Card) had concluded, Prevel struggled to engage the development community with his company's new product.
<cr1901_modern> Interesting, so there wasn't a market for FM synthesis on the PC, even though there _was_ one for the semi-related PC-{89}8

<andlabs> TIL the Yamaha Reface DX is a thing
<andlabs> Sweetwater is marketing it as The New DX7 for some reason, despite the fact it's a 4-op synth and the DX7 was 6-op
<andlabs> sadly I already have MIDI keyboards and a TX7 and FB01 if I really want 4-op synth (and I usually do) so :/

<andlabs> also I finallyt ried the akai 25 key thingy I have had for a while
<andlabs> and it's quite weird feeling, but that may be due to other factors
<andlabs> now I just need to find a sequencer that I can use to write music...
<andlabs> it woudl have to support non-GM MIDI devices
