<cr1901_modern> ej5: So I kinda-sorta forgot I had this, but I have a spare IBM 5150 motherboard I've previously used for testing... I'll have to pull that out and set that up on a temporary table (my workbench is full) for SB DSP dev
<cr1901_modern> IIRC I even wired a reset button mod to it
<cr1901_modern> Also sweet, this is back in stock (though more expensive): http://www.mtmscientific.com/pc-retro.html
<cr1901_modern> futarisIRCcloud: https://monotech.fwscart.com/NuXT_-_MicroATX_Turbo_XT_-_955MHz,_832K_RAM,_XT-CF,_SVGA,_Floppy,_Serial/p6083514_19777986.aspx This is the link to the XT motherboard you were asking about
<futarisIRCcloud> cr1901_modern: Thanks. I think someone posted a link to it last week.
<cr1901_modern> Yes indeed, but I never tagged you to notify you lol
<futarisIRCcloud> $200 for PC-RETRO, $300 for NuXT.
<cr1901_modern> Yes, it is expensive
<cr1901_modern> I got my spare 5150 as a gift, and well... I've put it through abuse

<whitequark> i understand why these 5150 and xt boards exist, but actually using them feels a bit like "what if we constructed an embedded system, in 2019, out of components designed with maximum amount of suck"
* cr1901_modern smiles and says "no comment" :)
<cr1901_modern> Fun fact I learned recently- IBM PC was in fact the slowest of the "8-bits (ignoring pedantry for a moment)" in 1981- prefetch queue couldn't save it.
* cr1901_modern sees if he can find the article
<Lord_Nightmare> jeez. cr1901_modern did you replace the power connector on the board?
<cr1901_modern> Nope :)
<cr1901_modern> It never caught fire or otherwise, so I run it as-is
<Lord_Nightmare> afaik its a standard molex(?) connector, or berg
<Lord_Nightmare> i forget
<cr1901_modern> berg is the floppy connector
<cr1901_modern> 3.5"*
<Lord_Nightmare> what does that pin do? is it a ground connector?
<cr1901_modern> It's a 5V pin
<Lord_Nightmare> the one which broke off
<Lord_Nightmare> ah and theres two 5v pins?
<cr1901_modern> three
<Lord_Nightmare> ok
<Lord_Nightmare> then its probably fine
<cr1901_modern> well now there's only 2
<cr1901_modern> b/c I broke one
<Lord_Nightmare> you should still get a new connector and swap it at some point
<cr1901_modern> That'll have to wait another 5 months for reasons. But also, I would realistically make the problem worse by trying to desolder a power connector
<cr1901_modern> Where does one buy P8 and P9 connectors today
<whitequark> that's just a molex innit?
<cr1901_modern> Yes, according to the wiki page
<whitequark> digikey then lol
<Lord_Nightmare> cr1901_modern: if you don't have the tools to desolder it don't bother
<Lord_Nightmare> it likely won't cause many issues as is
<Lord_Nightmare> when/if you get or borrow a desoldering station is when you should deal with it
<cr1901_modern> "black wires together". "red and red and you're dead"
<Lord_Nightmare> its not an immediate concern unless the 5v lines start to get hot
<cr1901_modern> since they're not keyed
<Lord_Nightmare> if the board sees constant use every day, i'd get it fixed
<Lord_Nightmare> if its used occasionally, it can wait
<cr1901_modern> Very occasionally
Xyz_39808 has quit [Ping timeout: 252 seconds]
<cr1901_modern> Most of the time it sits on a shelf
<cr1901_modern> But if I'm doing ISA stuff, it's pretty valuable since I can just put it onto a table and add/remove cards at will (occassionally while the system is on)
<cr1901_modern> Lord_Nightmare: I've never done temperature measurements, tbh. But would be an interesting experiment w/ an IR thermometer to run the power supply near full load (floppy, ISA, and maybe half height hard dri- oh wait, all mine are dead)
<whitequark> or use an adjustable load?
<cr1901_modern> I would need multiple loads (for 12v, -12v, -5v, and 5v), but yes that would work.
<cr1901_modern> I could attach to only 2 of the 3 pins of the 5v rail and see if the supply complains
<whitequark> pretty sure they're shorted on the supply side
<cr1901_modern> Ahhh well, there's _probably_ no problem then. Guessing splitting the rail into 3 was likely a precaution. <-- Lord_Nightmare
<whitequark> no it's because the wires can carry only so much current
<whitequark> and contacts
<whitequark> and they wanted to use some cheap connector
<cr1901_modern> If I get a good desoldering station, I'll replace it. My experience up until now is that the board tolerates missing 1/3 of its 5v rail just fine. And that's w/ 3 ISA slots populated (floppy, video, and whatever I'm debugging)
<whitequark> so the way this is specified is in terms of temperature rise under worst conditions
<whitequark> i.e. say you have 60°C inside of the case, and the current per wire causes 40°C of temp rise, and the wires are spec'd at 120°C, then it's OK
<whitequark> if the wires are spec'd at 90°C then that's a problem because they'll fall apart eventually
<whitequark> anyway. if with your desired load the wires don't get warm to touch, it probably doesn't matter at all other than just being mechanically weaker
<cr1901_modern> will check next time I power it on, but I don't recall anything like that
<whitequark> it'll be like 20 years before first split phase design appear, if I recall correctly
<whitequark> and they don't even use split phase on 5V
<whitequark> sorry, multiphase*
andlabs has quit [Quit: My MacBook has gone to sleep. ZZZzzz…]
<cr1901_modern> Right, it's an early (earlier) switching power supply using a dedicated PWM IC (as opposed to a microcontroller).
<whitequark> i think microcontrollers didn't become common in ATX PSUs until 2010s
<whitequark> i'm not even sure if they *are* common today
<cr1901_modern> Sample point I was thinking in particular: Apple uses msp430s for their laptop supplies
<whitequark> i think most multiphase switchers today (in PCs) are stuck near the load
<whitequark> like Vcore for CPU and GPU
<whitequark> you're not really aiming for absolute lowest ripple on 12V
<cr1901_modern> http://www.ti.com/lit/ds/symlink/lm3754.pdf "Up to 12 Channels for 300A Load" Wheeeeee
<whitequark> that's channels not phases
<whitequark> oh, are they cascadable?
<whitequark> i see

<cr1901_modern> Probably a subliminal advertiseme- ya know what, I'm just gonna be positive. I really like this.
<andlabs> will have to chekc that
<andlabs> I'm not sure if Ableton makes synths or just sequencers
<andlabs> which reminds me, does Ableton have an accessibility-friendly UI yet
* cr1901_modern shrugs
<andlabs> and support VST plugins's native file formats instead of hijacking the Open and Save dialogs to only support Ableton's proprietary formats
<andlabs> that was my experience with trying Ableton Live briefly a few years ago
<cr1901_modern> I don't use Ableton... when I have time to use my MIDI keyboard I'm going to try it w/ Ardour (the only good FOSS DAW)
<cr1901_modern> I don't remember where, but someone created a VST/LV2 using nukeykt's YM2612 core

<Lord_Nightmare> i thought nuked-opn2's license was incompatible with the steinberg vst2 license
<Lord_Nightmare> vst3 sdk i think is dual licensed as steinberg's non-commerical license and gplv3, with you being able to purchase a commercial license
<Lord_Nightmare> but vst2 is not
<Lord_Nightmare> so making a vst3 instrument with nukeykt 's core is allowed, but not vst2 unless you use an alternative SDK
<Lord_Nightmare> JUCE is gpl so again you can't use steinberg's vst2 sdk
<Lord_Nightmare> then again steinberg is no longer allowing vst2 sdk to be licensed out/distributed for 3 years
<cr1901_modern> Yea I can't even find the vst2 sdk, tbh
<Lord_Nightmare> i found a copy a while back
<Lord_Nightmare> https://web.archive.org/web/20181016150224/https://download.steinberg.net/sdk_downloads/vstsdk3610_11_06_2018_build_37.zip may work once archive.org gets the cut fiber cable at their main location fixed
<Lord_Nightmare> a fiber got cut. i'm assuming its an 'idiot with a backhoe' situation but it may be more complex
<cr1901_modern> well crap
nukeykt has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<Lord_Nightmare> according to ia there's a fiber splice team working on fixing it
