ChanServ changed the topic of ##yamahasynths to: Channel dedicated to questions and discussion of Yamaha FM Synthesizer internals and corresponding REing. Discussion of synthesis methods similar to the Yamaha line of chips, Sound Blasters + clones, PCM chips like RF5C68, and CD theory of operation are also on-topic. Lord_Nightmare: yeah I'm pretty sure at this point the cable is either backwards or damaged in some other way
<andlabs>
the question then is how to remove the cable
<Lord_Nightmare>
desoldering station?
<andlabs>
heh

<andlabs>
okay yeha I'm having a hard time finding info on tearing this thing apart
<andlabs>
there's the bad-screw repair for early models but I'm not even sure whether my model is an early one or a later one, and that doesn't help with the cable
<andlabs>
there's a video of someone tearing the key mech off but that's about it
<andlabs>
most Google results are just stores trying to sell the thing
<andlabs>
I also found a github project with a schematic diagram and pinout of the thing, but no instructions on how to disassemble
<andlabs>
also why does gearslutz always capitalize bit
<andlabs>
oh yeah, i also found a review of the A-01 where someone also struggled for some amount of time to get the cable in, but it eventually did fit
<andlabs>
the review text did not mentio nanything about this; this was only sped up footage in the video accompanying it

<Lord_Nightmare>
andlabs: as long as you don't twist the cable axially (like accidentally twisting a pants belt so the inside faces out halfway around your waist) or connect the keyboard upside down, i think there's only one way the connector can fit on both ends
<Lord_Nightmare>
the issue is whether the cable was crimped on upside down on one end at the factory
<Lord_Nightmare>
the connector should not be able to go in in such a way that forces the pins to bend
<Lord_Nightmare>
a DIL (dual-in-line) IDC (insulation displacement connector) like the keyboard cable seems to use, is typically keyed so it can only fit in in one direction anyway
<Lord_Nightmare>
using a tab in the center of one side
<Lord_Nightmare>
or along the two edges
<andlabs>
yeah
<andlabs>
I'm not sure what's up, but I do have it with me
<andlabs>
I'll start looking into it again soon

<andlabs>
Lord_Nightmare: ok so apparently last night I did wind up bending the pins trying to put the plug in
<andlabs>
we bent them back into shape
<andlabs>
I see the notches on the front in the picture I told you, I'm not sure why they aren't lining up
<andlabs>
ideally this should have either been exposed or be a connector and not just holes
<andlabs>
as a reminder, there is a notch just off-center on one side of the plug, and when inserting the device, without twisting the cable, that notch will face AWAY from the keys/the device
<andlabs>
it would also help if that notch was more obvious on the modules
