ChanServ changed the topic of ##yamahasynths to: Channel dedicated to questions and discussion of Yamaha FM Synthesizer internals and corresponding REing. Discussion of synthesis methods similar to the Yamaha line of chips, Sound Blasters + clones, PCM chips like RF5C68, and CD theory of operation are also on-topic. <fseidel> ValleyBell: woah, I thought CSM was completely unused on MD
<fseidel> where does Mega Turrican use it?

<ValleyBell> I thought "Stage 1 (Secret Area)", but apparently enables CSM mode by accident.

<fseidel> ValleyBell: is the error audible, or not?
<ValleyBell> I didn't notice a change when replacing "52 27 FF" with "52 27 40" (latter is "multi-freq ch3 without CSM)
<fseidel> ah
<ValleyBell> I just remember that song being broken for some time when I ported MAME's YM2612 to VGMPlay, because the timers didn't work correctly.
SceneCAT has quit [Ping timeout: 250 seconds]
<cr1901_modern> VGMPlay uses the timers?
<fseidel> Chris Huelsbeck's driver really seems to be quite good, it's a shame that's the only game to actually use it
<fseidel> minus the bomberman and jim power protos
<ValleyBell> It doesn't have to, but CSM mode relies on the timers for doing automatic key on/off.
<ValleyBell> I had to fix the timers when I wrote stuff like SMPSPlay, GEMSPlay and DEPlay. (DE = the MegaDrive Data East sound driver)

<cr1901_modern> https://cybre.space/@gatewave/102776787585763300 Although this clearly wasn't a priority to me when I started the channel (I didn't get logging until *checks* Feb of this year), this is definitely retroactive justification for using IRC :P
<andlabs> my point exactly
<andlabs> but nooo we can't use IRC and mumble
<cr1901_modern> This is oversimplifying a bit, but: IRC hate is in vogue.
<andlabs> for good reason
<andlabs> IRC *cannot* advance past 1992
<andlabs> I mean sure it tried, and those tries all failed
<andlabs> when was your last successful XDCC transfer?
<andlabs> when did you last see a 256-color CTCP message?
<cr1901_modern> I've never done an XDCC xfer... although I probably should since bakabt pruned my acct
<ValleyBell> I see a nicely colours welcome message every time I join badnik.zone :P
<andlabs> and to add insult to injury, these failed attempts have just resulted in mountains of technical debt for anyone wanting to make a client
<natarii> imo irc isn't meant for mass adoption by non-nerds, and i think that's okay and doesn't really need to be changed
<ValleyBell> *nicely coloured
<andlabs> yes but that's using the normal 16-color CTCP
<andlabs> the real problem is very simple: not everyone can host a server for their chat service of choice
<natarii> and yeah the last time i used xdcc was getting anime on rizon ;p
<andlabs> just like not everyone can host their own web server or email
<andlabs> and I'm not sure how to fix that.
<andlabs> also let me clarify, I don't mean *any* XDCC transfer
<andlabs> I mean specifically one that *worked*
<andlabs> or hell, not even XDCC, but ANY DCC transfer
<natarii> federated protocols are nice because even if you can't host your own server, at least you can choose one you like and expect it to interop with others
<andlabs> *ANY type of
<andlabs> but yeah, attempting to bring features of modern chat protocols to IRC will backfire in spectacular fashion
<andlabs> which is a shame because there is one IRC-only person I would really like to share photos privately with
<andlabs> at least Discord lets you do that, since all uploaded files have an HTTP URL
<natarii> cr1901_modern: are you on fedi?
<cr1901_modern> natarii: https://mastodon.social/@cr1901 I think you found this channel when I did light advertising on fedi a few months back
<natarii> ah - maybe
<cr1901_modern> I do not use it nearly as much as hellsite
<cr1901_modern> because I enjoy staring into an abyss
<natarii> opposite for me because i miss post visibility levels when im on twitter ;p
<cr1901_modern> And indeed Exiled-Destiny is done :/. Definitely lots of nostalgia from me watching a bunch of their subs from last decade
<cr1901_modern> natarii: That xband impl o.0;... that's awesome
<cr1901_modern> I know someone who was hired by the company who made xband to do some REing to make games work w/ it- apparently not a fun job
<andlabs> huh?
<andlabs> also I just bought a sealed xband
<andlabs> which is cool
<andlabs> I definitely plan on doing a byuu like MD project
<natarii> i wanted to work on stuff with retrolive but it seems like they're falling apart
<cr1901_modern> disk horse?
<natarii> kinda. i think the big problem is people have dayjobs and limited time
<natarii> and people feel ignored because of that, or feel that it's not worth it
<natarii> to be clear any kind of xband revival is basically a dead project, they were working on new hardware/software to accomplish the same thing
<natarii> (this is getting offtopic, im sorry ;_;)
<cr1901_modern> I've never enforced OT and don't plan to
<natarii> fair
<cr1901_modern> (it helps build community IMO to allow off-topic. Was once part of a forum where it was guaranteed each thread would derail at least once :P)
<andlabs> I'm gonna bring back the Japan-specific version of Seega Channel
<cr1901_modern> Sonic Eraser?
<andlabs> no, that was Game Toshokan/MeagNet
<andlabs> JP Sega Channel only has two (2) known surviving examples that are publicily known about
<andlabs> I happen to own one of them =P
<andlabs> it's the most useless thing I could think of
<natarii> one of the retrolive people has one of the at&t edge16 modems. very cool but also kinda useless ;p
<andlabs> MegaNet is interesting
<andlabs> the Game Toshokan service did a lot of what Satellaview did, but in 1990, and with only 128KB games
<andlabs> but there were also a number of standalone games that could connect to the Meganet uber-service to do multiplayer games
<andlabs> and possibly some games that didn't use a service and just let you dial other people directly
<andlabs> if you ever wonder why Flicky and Fatal Labyrnth are so ... simple and seemingly devoid of polish, this is why
<andlabs> they had to fit in 128KB
<andlabs> we have one ROM called Riddle Wired that's a quiz game, but it turns out there were at least 12 volumes of puzzles, rleeased in 4-month intervals
<andlabs> Sunsoft ran a Sunsoft-only news service
<cr1901_modern> Flicky feels like it shouldn't even use 128kB, tbh
<andlabs> so you can find out about all the newest Famicom games on your Mega Drive =P
<andlabs> the people who were responsible for choosing Genesis gams for ... every single collection of Genesis games ever are stupid for wasting space on Flicky
<cr1901_modern> That's where I played it
<cr1901_modern> Maybe that was the minimal ROM mask size... SNES manual says 256kB is the minimum mask size for cartridges
<andlabs> and that's not because FLicky is bad
<andlabs> I'm sure it's not bad
<andlabs> but when you only have six games to choose from, including Flicky feels like cheating
<andlabs> the Game Toshokan cartridge only has 128KB of RAM
<andlabs> on board
<andlabs> so the games are limited in size by that
<andlabs> let me check the uhhh
<andlabs> what the Radica 6-game thingy comes with
<andlabs> because I'm sure it's 50% games I would not even consider including
<andlabs> ah yes, altered beast
<andlabs> I will never understand this game's endurance
<andlabs> sorry, it's extremely dull
<fseidel> same. it's painfully slow
<fseidel> same with vectorman and chakan
<fseidel> especially the latter
<andlabs> I have yet to seriously play either
<andlabs> I wouldn't be surprised if Chakan is slow
<andlabs> this latter one is literally a 65536-iteration busy loop
<andlabs> actually it's the same ending, just part 1 and part 2
<andlabs> the ending you were expected to see was the one at the end of https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LDiOtr5X81Q
<andlabs> lots of people in the comments for all these videos comparing it to the fromsoftware souls games
<andlabs> idgi
<andlabs> granted breath of the wild is the only thing remotely similar to any of htos egames that I have played
