"PC-based recreation of the sound driver" is high-level emulation and makes you able to introduces fixed (and bugs)
<ValleyBell>
SMPSPlay also tries to cover as many variants of SMPS as possible, so it doesn't always behave 100% like the original driver.

That's what I rely on emulating the original game in an emulator + logging VGMs with that.

The DAC also sounds much cleaner in SMPSPlay than the actual game, because SMPSPlay doesn't have to pause the PCM sample stream in order to process the sequence data.
