ChanServ changed the topic of ##yamahasynths to: Channel dedicated to questions and discussion of Yamaha FM Synthesizer internals and corresponding REing. Discussion of synthesis methods similar to the Yamaha line of chips, Sound Blasters + clones, PCM chips like RF5C68, and CD theory of operation are also on-topic. <balrog>
Yeah but tbh what would make more sense is direct stepper control with a pc drive
<whitequark>
oh
<balrog>
(Bypass the stepper drivers in the drive and run them directly)
<balrog>
Apple’s interface gives software access to the individual phases
<whitequark>
ahhhhhh
<whitequark>
ok yeah no problem with that
<whitequark>
cna you send me some floppies?
<balrog>
Direct stepper support would be useful for sub level microstepping which Al Kossow is interested interruptinuse
<balrog>
Interested in using *
<balrog>
Though it seems he’s using Greaseweazle
<Foone>
yeah. although from what I understand, he's just using it as an interface to the motors. basically he's doing all the data in the analyzer, and just using greaseweazle as an easy way to tell the drive what track to go to
<ej5>
Foone: maybe you should give him that floppy analyzer you found at weird stuff. the one with the super precise linear actuators instead of steppers
<Lord_Nightmare>
is that like the kodak 3mb/12mb 5.25 drives?
<andlabs>
1) what's a good 5.25" floppy disk drive to get that can read both 40 and 80 sector disks? TEAC FD-55GFR? one of "DDF-52D, DFE222A10A, DDF5-46С"?
<andlabs>
2) what cable should I use with these, assuming I can't find a drive with such a ribbon? is this generic, judging from cowlark's "preferably one with two connectors and a twist"? [curses @ being too smart for your own good and not quite grasping industry standards that don't advertise themselves out of fear of getting things right the first time]
<andlabs>
3) does anyone have a suggestion for an enclosure for both a 5.25" and a 3.5" drive? two separate enclosures will do, but I want to fit it, the Cypress CY8CKIT-059 (according to amazon, 8.4 in x 6 in x 0.4 in, or 21.3 cm x 15.24 cm x 1.02 cm), and a picoPSU in
<andlabs>
that should be all I need to get going
<andlabs>
ebay can't find anything for any of those three drives I put in quotes; also I should have said I don't care about writing
<andlabs>
though lol DDF5-46С got me an IBM tape drive so close enough?????
<cr1901_modern>
>so I guess I'll ask again
<cr1901_modern>
(7:00:52 PM) cr1901_modern: FD-55GFR is the quintessential 5.25"
<cr1901_modern>
And yes it can read both high density and double density disks
<cr1901_modern>
If you can't find a cable without a twist, you'll need to jumper drive 1 as "drive 1" and drive 2 as "drive 2"
<cr1901_modern>
with the twist, both cables are jumpered as "drive 2"
<andlabs>
okay
<andlabs>
I should have rephrased
<andlabs>
what other models can I look for if I can't find a FD-55GFR
<andlabs>
but good news
<andlabs>
I bought a FD-55GFR with a cable, so
<andlabs>
that last quesiton is all that's left
<andlabs>
sorry for appearing to not have listened the first time cr1901_modern
<cr1901_modern>
No worries, I'm cranky tonight and shouldn't be taking it out on others
<cr1901_modern>
And I'm not sure offhand... FD-55GR is pretty common. Look for something by NEC
<andlabs>
I did find one with a cable that I could confirm was working after all
<andlabs>
which I took
<andlabs>
so now all I need left is the enclosures... I'll keep looking
<cr1901_modern>
enclosures are tricky... maybe Foone 3d-printed his own or knows someone who has?

<andlabs>
I can't even use a broken one I'm willing to gut because no one seems to sell any on ebay
<andlabs>
I'm not going to buy a brand new one only to destroy it
<andlabs>
though I should probably figure out how big the cases I need will be on the long side

ah, cowlark's chasis was an HP 1300T
<andlabs>
should've watched his video lol
<andlabs>
and the only one on ebay is $300
<andlabs>
nope
<andlabs>
i love how people who don't have a power cord to test with list things as for parts
<andlabs>
why is shipping from canada to the US so fucking expensive
<Sarayan>
because price gouging is a US specialty
<andlabs>
yeah but it's more expensive than shipping from other countries
