ChanServ changed the topic of ##yamahasynths to: Channel dedicated to questions and discussion of Yamaha FM Synthesizer internals and corresponding REing. Discussion of synthesis methods similar to the Yamaha line of chips, Sound Blasters + clones, PCM chips like RF5C68, and CD theory of operation are also on-topic. <andlabs>
are floppy disk ribbon cables only supposed to go into the drive one way?
<andlabs>
I can fully put in this cable into my TEAC FD-55 with ease in one direction, and MOSTLY in theo ther direction, with only some very tiny slivrers of some pins showing diagonally
<andlabs>
which is not "obviously wrong" enough for me to be confident
<andlabs>
also, if my cable doesn't have a red strip, how can I tell which is ground?
<andlabs>
side (closer to / frather away from) the twist?
<andlabs>
er, which end is supposed to be red
<andlabs>
and lastly how do I turn the picopsu on after plugging it in? or will this drive not show the drive light without the ribbon cable?
<balrog>
andlabs: yes, if you have it the wrong way, the light will be lit up and it won't work
<balrog>
your cable doesn't have a red strip and doesn't have a tab?
<balrog>
there are photos here that should solve things for you
<andlabs>
oh you can only see the notch to orient the ribbon cable in the dirve properly if you tilt the drive just right, huh; that's myf irst question answered
<andlabs>
balrog: it has no tab, but it has the outline of one
<andlabs>
I'm guessing it was cut off at some point?
<Foone>
sometimes they can fall out. They're usually just held in by friction, and if it's been in the drive for a long time, it'll fall out when you pull it out
<Foone>
in general it'll be safe to get it backwards: all that'll happen is that it won't work, and usually the activity light is stuck on.
<Foone>
so if that happens, turn off the PC and fix it
<Foone>
but you're very unlikely to damage the drive by doing it. I've done it hundreds of times with no issues
<andlabs>
ah cool
<andlabs>
I figured that too
<andlabs>
bu tnow I have a bigger problem: the USB PID/VID are wrong
<andlabs>
time to open a bug
<andlabs>
whee
<andlabs>
I just tried to shove this 5.25" floppy disk drive into an external CD drive chasis
<andlabs>
it would have worked but I was totally the wrong person to do it lol
<andlabs>
never trying that again
<andlabs>
I guess I'll have to spare the expense for a dedicated chasis :/ was hoping to make this as cheaply as possible
